I used Multi-grain Sun Chips (harvest cheddar with no other added seasoning and these turned out perfect....looked and tasted like the ones from A&W and I just used plain white onions. Had no problem making the coating stick using the buttermilk. I also made a dip inspired by Outback Steak House......3 tbs each sour cream and mayo, 1 tbs of heinz chili sauce, and 1 tsp bbq sauce......my husband couldn't believe how good they were and shocked that they were just baked...will make again and again!!

Ellie, you hit a home run on this one!! I LOVED it and so did my husband!! We had these for the first time with a wonderful ribeye steak that my husband grilled for us. These were the perfect compliment and healthy to boot!! For those of you having trouble getting the coating to stick, try my recommendations. First of all, I don't have buttermilk on hand readily, so I do what I've done on many occasions when buttermilk is requested and used equal amount of milk with a T of vinegar. (Helps curdle the milk! We didn't use a food processor for the chips, but probably will next time. Using a baggy and crushing them worked well, but would be better in a fine powder. Also, we used the full-fat chips, not baked. Figured the rings needed some of the good fat to help them brown. We were not disappointed! The cayenne pepper gives them a super kick too! For those having problems with the coating not sticking, the secret is LET THEM REST!! Dont' just throw them in the oven from the coating! Give them at least 5-10 minutes to soak in all that good coating you just put on and they'll stick just fine. Even cutting into them with a fork I didn't have ONE that lost it's coating. Don't be afraid to let them brown a bit. The flavors get MUCH better and the onions carmelize a bit - total YUM. This will TOTALLY be our go-to recipe when we need an onion ring fix!! Yippee and thanks again, Ellie!! YOU ROCK!!

This was an excellent way to make onion rings. I LOVE onion rings but never eat them because it's so fattening. Not anymore! Like other reviewers, I did have trouble coating the rings. The buttermilk made it clump up. I processed it extra to get it finer, but it didn't work. Oh well - still got 14 out of the batch. My partner, who doesn't like onion rings, tried one and had four more. He loved them, and I have a feeling so will you!

My husband who is a junk food junkie thought these onion rings were the real deal. He was stunned when he find out that they were the healthy version and savored every bite. I used salsa flavored multi-grain Sun Chips instead of potato chips and whole wheat flour vs. all purpose and the changes worked well.

I usually don't give my opinion about a recipe that I haven't tried yet....but if I'm going to eat any chips (which is rarely, I go with regular chips versus baked chips. Check out the ingredients. Regular chips (Lays has 3 ingredients (potato, salt and oil. Now read the ingredients for baked chips. A 99 cent bag can last me 3 lunches. I pick less perservatives. Just had to put that bit of information out there.

I was craving onion rings and I knew I didn't want fried ones so I looked this recipe up. It was really good. I'm giving this 4 stars instead of 5 because it's not over-the-top excellent. It's good and there's no need to ever fry onion rings. This is a healthy alternative any time you feel like eating onion rings!
