Since so many reviewers suggested adding additional flavors, I didn't consider making the recipe as is. I don't believe in making a recipe once as is, if you know it is a dud. Make it better the first time you make it, by adding what sounds good to you. I added additional vegetables to the roasting pan: a red pepper, small onion, and 2 TBSP fresh oregano (with an additional TBSP of oil. I left the beans out and added at the end: grilled chicken, toasted pine nuts, another 2 TBSP fresh oregano, 1/2 c. fresh parsley, 2 TBSP vermouth, 1/8 tsp red pepper flakes and finished it with a sqeeze of lemon over each plate. I increased the pasta by 50% with all the extra ingredients, so this feeds at least 5 people. It came out really good, my husband says it's a keeper!

I made this recipe to the letter, and I have to say, it was extremely bland. I had never had canelli beans, and they actually have an incredibly delicious, meaty flavor. They were fantastic, but not an ideal pairing with pasta. Many of the reviewers of this recipe added their own ingredients to add flavor, which I could see would make the recipe work. I probably wouldn't make this again.

I admit, I made a few changes to this recipe but all very minor. I used 8 garlic cloves instead of 4. I also added two tablespoons of plain tomato sauce JUST to get teeny bit of sauciness going. I also added tons of basil (because I love basil! All in a all, it was an awesome recipe ... thanks Ellie!

I followed the recipe to the letter and it had absolutely no taste. It was so poor, I added alfredo sauce from a jar to make it edible. Sorry, it was a bomb.

I was surprised how bland this tasted...especially after I added some additonal roasted vegetables and extra garlic. I ended up adding a lot more parmesan and salt to give it some flavor. Perhaps my tomatoes weren't sweet enough, or maybe because I jused a whole-grain pasta, but it was just okay. I like the spirit of the recipe (pasta, beans, roasted vegetables, but wouldn't follow this one again. I would probably add a light sauce to give it a bit more pizazz.

The tomatoes and garlic really cooked up nicely and tasted delicious, but the beans and pasta weren't a great combination. I tried this recipe substituting grilled chicken breast for the beans and it is great. It took 5 minutes to cook the chicken in a little bit of olive on top of the stove. Nice recipe.

I saw the show and couldn't wait to try the recipe...made it last night, but I thought it came out a little bland. I'm not giving up on it - just looking for advice (for a novice! How do you add wine to make sauce? Also, I didn't wind up with much garlic even though I roasted 6 cloves...did I do something wrong? When they were done roasting there was very little garlic, I feel like I removed a lot of browned skin.

I did make some small changes. I used small white beans, and at the end, I poured off and saved some of the pasta water and added some white wine to give it more of a sauce. It was outstanding. I also used more garlic.
