Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 cups water
  • 1 1/2 cups (packed) light brown sugar
  • 1/2 stick butter, melted
  • 2 tablespoons plus 1 1/2 cups flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 1/4 teaspoons cinnamon
  • 3/4 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 2 1/2 pounds cooking apples, cored and cut into wedges
  • 1 1/2 cups oatmeal
  • 1 stick butter, cut into small pieces and at room temperature
  • 12 (1 cup) plastic containers with a lids

Directions

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. In a mixing bowl, combine the water, 3/4 cup brown sugar, melted butter, 2 tablespoons of the flour, salt, 1 teaspoon of cinnamon, and 1/2 teaspoon of grated nutmeg, whisk until smooth. Place the apples in a 9 by 2-inch glass baking dish (10 cup) and pour the liquid sugar mixture over the apples. Mix well. In a mixing bowl, combine the remaining 3/4 cup brown sugar, remaining 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon, remaining 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg, 1 1/2 cups flour, oatmeal, and butter. Using your fingers, work the mixture together until it resembles a coarse crumb-like mixture. Sprinkle the oatmeal topping over the top of the apple mixture. Bake for 1 hour, or until the apples are tender and the crust is golden. Remove from the oven and cool completely. Place a spoonful of the crispy into each serving container and cover tightly with a lid

    Awesome!

This is the best apple crisp. The water mixture on the apples definitely was the best part of this dish. I decreased the... butter in the topping to 1/2 stick, and decreased the white flour and added more oatmeal. I think next time I will use even less butter and make less topping. It was a little too dry on top but it was still excellent!Read more

    "Apple Crisp-0-Licious" Favorite Fall Recipie!

Rated: 5 stars out of 5
Just took this out of the oven, I could hardly wait for it to cool enough to taste! It was absolutely delicious! I... substituted apple cider for for the water. Did not use any nuts tthis time, although I will try using them next time. (just didnt have them on hand! Apples were tender & done to perfection! Baked it for exactly one hour. The only thing that would or could make it any better was a scoop of vanilla ice cream. I even contimplated just drizzling some Baily's Irish Cream on top. I imagine that would be delicious too!Read more

A good starting point but not the ultimate

Rated: 3 stars out of 5
Just made it and had the first piece. Apples were nice and soft, I reduced the sugar by 1/2 a cup and found the apple were... not too sweet. However, as others have mentioned I felt the sauce was too watery and the crust had too much flour. I think I will cut a 1/2 of water next time use 1/2 of the flour. Overall though a nice way to get your crisp lessons started. Read more

    Autumn's Finest!

Rated: 5 stars out of 5
This recipe was very easy and made a very creamy, caramely apple filling and a nutty, crunchy topping that everyone from the... children to the adults absolutely loved. It was like a caramel apple in a bowl! This could have been cloyingly sweet but, I served it over a scoop of vanilla ice cream and topped it with whipped cream and it helped to cut the sweetness. It is still a very rich dessert so a little goes a long way but, it is absolutely divine! My mother always ate her apple crisp warm, in a bowl, with cream poured over it. I would imagine that would also cut the sweetness and would be a yummy Southern treat on a cold Fall evening by the fire. Bon Apetit!Read more

A bit sugary for my taste

Rated: 4 stars out of 5
Good recipe, however, I have to agree that the filling was a bit too sweet. I used tart apples so I was surprised how sweet... it was. Next time I will halve the sugar content to make up for it. Other than that it was pretty good.Read more

    Wonderful

Rated: 5 stars out of 5
I am on a group at Church where we all take a turn feeding about 20-25 people once a week at a local Mission I was up for the... dessert for the week I made this crisp. It is WONDERFUL I did use a small lemon for the juice over the apple slices so that they didn't turn brown. Has lots of favor and I am keeping the recipe to make again for the mission next month.Read more
