I've tried many banana bread recipes and this one is the best. I believe it's the vegetable shortening that lends a crisp outer crust and fluffy center to this delicious snack bread. My cook time was far less than suggested in the recipe. 45-50 minutes was all I needed and I used a dark metal loaf pan (Caphalon.

I'd highly recommend this to anyone making banana bread for their first or five hundredth time. Every single time I make it, I end up cutting off "just one more piece" until I notice a significant portion of the loaf is gone. Be sure to use very, very ripe bananas for an enhanced banana flavor; the ones I used were practically 100% brown on the outside.

This recipe was so delicious! Very easy recipe for first time bread bakers like me. I would definately reccomend this to anyone who would like to make a "classic" banana bread recipe. Scrumdiddlyumptious!

I was very disappointed in this banana bread recipe, especially after reading so many great reviews. I followed the recipe as written except I added chocolate chips. The finished bread turned out extremely brown, almost looking burned, but it was not over-cooked! I've added chocolate chips into other banana bread recipes before and it did not make the entire bread turn dark brown. Besides the off color, the bread did not have much of a banana taste to it. The whole combination of the color, lack of banana flavor, and knowing the quantity of shortening in this recipe all make me want to keep searching for a better recipe!

Made this recipe today for my sons - had to substitute 1/2 cup butter for the shortening as I was out. Added freshly grated nutmeg and a splash of vanilla and increased banana to a full cup. Came out perfect and completely delicious - a real hit with my boys!

I made a double batch using six mashed bananas (medium size and one cup of toasted walnuts. Baked one in a glass loaf pan and the other in a nonstick loaf pan. Both came out excellent.
