I have never made this type of soup before and the recipe was easy to follow and came out great. I especially like the kick of the spices to add something different.

This is a wonderful recipe for classic split pea. It is a recipe that tastes like it has been passed down for generations.

I've made this simple, delicious recipe 3 times and it seems like a nearly fail safe way to make a great split pea soup. I've recieved the same comments as other reviewers that even those that do not care for split pea soup seem to really like this recipe. I've soaked the peas overnight and another time skipped this process all together. I can tell no difference with the finished soup. I've also used regular and smoked ham hocks, both are different and good. I grow my own herbs and use the recommended amount of fresh thyme, I'm not sure why some give it bad press, each to his own. What is additionally attractive about this recipe to me is that it does not call for chicken stock, instead it calls for water. That is a nice change. I made homemade cornbread and a dollop of sour cream to the finished soup....nirvana.

Every year, I add a new soup to my repertoire, and this was my new one for this year. Oh, man! The ham hocks at my market came smoked, so I eliminated the step of cooking the ham hock before making the soup. It came out wonderfully! My husband has eaten it every day since I made it. He even took it to work for lunch, and he manages a restaurant! This is totally a keeper!

This was so simple to make and yummy to eat! I used yellow split peas and called it "bean soup" so my 5 year old would'nt complain and he loved it!

This dish did take a little time, but there was nothing hard about it. I reserved the liquid from the ham shanks (couldn't find ham hocks and strained it. I used it instead of the water in the soup. I also used low sodium chicken stock and a little water to make the 8 cups. I used more of the veggies because I love them. It was wonderful! My husband definitely over ate this one.

This is a terrific hearty soup. My husband even liked it. Instead of a ham hock I used a neck bone. (It is so important to use hock or neck for flavor, so never skip this ingredient. Perfect for a cold day.
