My (Italian mother makes a similar cookie at Christmas but has lost the recipe and makes it up as she goes along. I tried Emeril's recipe and like it just as well or better. It's more like my mother's original cookies than what she makes now.

I made a couple alterations, like substituting the nuts in the recipe for the ones I had on hand. Also, the procedure for making them was more tedious than necessary. I changed it successfully by making a long log and rolling the filling in it, then sliced them in 1/2 inch pieces. Much easier. This recipe can easily be halved, though, as it yielded a LOT of cookies!!

The cookies take a little time to make, but are well worth the effort. The light, tender dough combined with the flavorful filling was a big hit at my house.

Although they are not as easy as they look to make, they come out wonderful and everyone enjoys them. They are a real treat with a nice cup of espresso.

This is one of the easiest doughs I've ever worked with. The filling can get very sticky, so I just trippled the Brandy content when the food processer started binding up. The results were an absolute WOW last year at Christmas. This year, I made two batches, and there still wasn't enough!

Delicious cookies, but quite a bit of work. I was too generous with the filling and wound up with 36 cookies instead of 48. Two tablespoons may be a bit too generous for each square.

Yup, I tried this recipe and have to give it a "5er" for authenticity. Great recipe that's fun to do. I found that rolling the dough extra thin yields an increadibly light cookie...
