Didnt have cream of tartar so used vinegar. I also left the oven for 5 minutes after reading the other reviews before turning the oven off. They turned out perfect!

I had a leftover bag of Tollhouse Winter chips (dark chocolate and mint. I chopped 1 cup of those and instead of walnuts, I used 1 cup chopped almonds. I tinted my meringue bright green. They taste like a girl scout thin mint cookie. They are awesome. Im bringing them to an Easter dinner.

Great cookies, but very temperamental with the weather. I mixed the semi-sweet chips with rice krispies like my grandma used to do at Christmas...delicious!

Great cookie. I use pecans instead of walnuts. Definitely use parchment paper on cookie sheets. It keeps cookie from browning on the bottom.

Why do people "review" a recipe and then make so many changes that it is NO LONGER the recipe!??? If you are going to make so many changes, than it is truly not a "review" of the recipe. Some helpful hints are fine but to change more than 1 thing is NOT the recipe. Personally I love this recipe as is!

Excellent recipe! I have made them for several years now and they are a favorite. I use mini chocolate chips in mine as others have suggested. In refernece to the reviewer who had a problem with their gass oven, I also have a gas oven and I don't turn mine off until they are in the oven for about 5 minutes. I leave them overnight and they come out light and crispy and beautifully shaped.

Wow! These cookies disappeared so fast I had to make more the next day. I changed up the recipe by reducing the amount of sugar and adding a teaspoon of instant coffee and a teaspoon of cocoa powder for mocha flavored cookies! I also tried substituting coconut extract for vanilla the first time I tried this recipe and it was amazing! I love this recipe!
Update: I have been making these cookies for a few months now and discovered a new flavor to make for the Holidays. Substitute vanilla for 1/4 tsp vanilla and 1/4 tsp Mint extract Instead of mini chocolate chips fold in 1/3 cup crushed candy cane. Drop onto cookie sheet and sprinkle with festive colored sugar before popping into the oven. People have called these cookies Candy Cane Meringues! Enjoy!

I love to cook and bake but I have never made meringues before so I decided to try these out. They were a lot easier than I had expected and turned out amazing. I didn't have cream of tartar and didn't want to make the trip just for that so I substituted it with white distilled vinegar and it worked wonderfully. I used a little less sugar and half of the chocolate and nuts. One cup of each would be too much for these little guys in my opinion. They turned out delicious these will definately go into my recipe stash!

I've tried a lot of meringue cookies and this is by far the easiest and best. I cut back on the sugar just a tad (we're diet soda drinkers so the sugar leaves a nasty aftertaste and omit the nuts (allergies but they're still amazing. To the person who said their cookies got flat using a gas oven, try leaving it on after it preheats for a little.. I have a gas oven, it took about five minutes to preheat and I left it on for about 20 while I was making the cookies and mine didn't get flat at all.

These are the terrible. They tasted like french fries and fish. If you are going to make these DO NOT cook them for two hours. Mine burned.
