Ingredients

  • 1 cup sugar
  • 2 sticks butter
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • Assorted brightly colored, hard candies
  • 1 (2 to 3-inch) star cookie cutter
  • Special Equipment: 1 small triangle cookie cutter

Directions

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.

In a mixer with a paddle attachment, cream the sugar and butter until smooth. Add the egg and the vanilla extract. Mix in the flour. Remove the dough from the mixer and press into a rectangular shape. Wrap in plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 1 hour.

Remove from the refrigerator and cut dough into 1/3. Roll out dough, 1 piece at a time to a 3/16-inch thickness. Cut out as many large stars as possible. Repeat with all of the dough. Cut a small triangle out of each the arms on each star.

Place the hard candy, by color, into small plastic bags. Place a towel over the bags and crush the candy with a meat mallet. Place all of the cookies on parchment lined sheet pans. In each of the

triangle holes, fill with different colors of crushed hard candy. Bake in the oven for 10 to 15 minutes or until lightly golden brown, and the candy has melted.

    Beautiful and tasty

Rated: 5 stars out of 5
I made these cookies to put in Christmas gift baskets and they turned out great! The cookie itself is delicious. I made... them with jolly ranchers and just omitted the watermellon flavor. I thought they tasted great. I had read previous reviews about how hard the dough was to work with, but I just chilled it overnight and, with using generous amounts of flour, I had no problem working with it. After about 3 rollings, I accumulated the scrap dough all together and chilled it again before re-working it. Also, when I was near the end of my dough, I used the mini cutters I had used to create the centers (X-mas tree, candy cane, etc) and cut out mini cookies and topped them with a little bit of the crushed candy for color and added those to the baskets as well. They were adorable. I will definitely make these again!Read more

    Delicious and Very Pretty

Rated: 5 stars out of 5
I didn't have any trouble making these cookies at all. They came out great! Be sure to use parchment paper for this recipe.... This is a good one for the kids to help with too. I have four year old twin girls, and they love helping in the kitchen.Read more

Messy and not worth the effort

Rated: 1 stars out of 5
After seeing the show, my daughter and I attempted to make these thinking they were going to be the highlight of our cookie... baking. It was very labor intensive, didn't look or taste good. We ended up throwing them in the trash and made the more traditional cookies instead.Read more

    Look pretty, taste awful

Rated: 2 stars out of 5
These cookies do present well. However, with the candy centers they taste terrible. I tried different varieties in an attempt... to make them edible (lifesavers, jolly ranchers, creme savers)but it didn't work. The creme savers tasted the best (still not good) but didn't look as pretty melted. I wouldn't make these again.Read more

    not worth the effort

Rated: 1 stars out of 5
unfortunately, these did not seem to be worth the effort to make. they did not come out looking as good as the photos, the... dough was difficult to work with and the candies made a mess and did not melt well. they also were not very tasty! i would not waste the time again on these.Read more
