This has become a Christmas Eve tradition at our house... All the family raves about it and request it often....This year I will be using a Honey Baked Ham hambone, think that will add a little extra zing to it, although it is perfection as it is!.... Just love this soup!!!!

Exactly what I was looking for, I modified because there is only two of us and left out leaks and did not top with Onion's.

This is my last cool weather meal of the year, as it is supposed to be in the 80s here next week. I used the ham bone from our Christmas ham, as we froze it for later. This is always great, although I have never served in the tureen with the bread -- we like bread "dipping" in our bean soup, so I serve the bread on the size and some parmesan for the top of the soup. Terrifically seasoned and very very tasty.

Just wanted to reply to the cook from Media, PA regarding what to do with the other half of bean mixture. I haven't made this yet, but I believe that you add the beans the you pureed back to the pot with the rest of the beans (this helps to thicken the soup, while still having some texture from the whole beans.
    Hope that helps.

I made this while on a camping trip in a cast iron dutch oven over a campfire. We had people from all over the campgrounds coming because it smelled so delish. Everybody raved. Thanks Emeril.

This is a really great bean soup recipe -- especially the layered bread at the bottom. Just make sure you have a lot of people over to help you eat it all.

Only "okay". I'd make Emeril's Split Pea & Ham hocks recipe instead, the next time I get in the mood for this type of soup.

I varied several aspects of this soup, and still it was amazing. Cannot wait to have the leftovers.

For those who have made this recipe can you explain how it comes together at the end. I see you separate the bean mixture and put some in the oven over bread but then what? Either I'm missing something or there is a step or two missing from the instructions. HELP PLEASE I really want to make this!!

The soup was very good but I would leave out the addition of onion you put on the top of the soup prior to baking. Other than that, it was a really good soup and I do plan on making it again!
