I have made them with just butter and just Crisco and also tried a combination of Crisco and butter. Crisco is the winner. I had also added white chocolate chips, raisins, Heath Bar bits,a couple tablespoon peanut butter. Made 12 doz and gave them out to the office. Raves and when are you going to make them again. Crisco is the way to go.

I used butter instead of Crisco and they turned out flat and greasy. Thankfully I checked the oven right at 8 mins or they would've been burned too. Reduced oven temp to 325 which helped with the burning. I gave it 5 stars so I wouldn't ruin the rating since I messed up by using butter. I think next time I will just use Food Network Magazine's Chewy Oatmeal-Raisin Cookie recipe and add the choc chips and coconut.

I found the taste to be rather flat, my feeling is it needs more brown sugar [less white] and more vanilla.

These are the BEST cookies I have ever made and I have made many a cookie. I used butter instead of crisco. I have added white chocolate, raisins (both black and golden, dried blueberries and dried craisins, on top of all the other stuff. Only about 1/2 cup of each. OoooLaaaLaa Do not omit the coconut. Adds so much moisture and sweetness. Also, do not over cook. Crispy on outside, chewy on inside. Exceptional. My kids call these "Cow" cookies! Love 'em and everyone requests them whenever I go. They are requested by all the kids at my daughters dorm. I bake these every week and ship them all over.

Really delish! I substituted unsalted butter for shortening, walnuts for pecans, and omitted the coconut. Six oz. chocolate chips didn't seem like enough, so I upped it to 10 oz. Also added 2-3 min. to baking time. The recipe says yields 2 dozen - maybe if they are cow pie size! I was able to get 5 dozen heaping teaspoon-size cookies from one batch of this yummy dough.

thank you this recipe is my favorite, i've tried many recipes and none of the came close to what grandma used to make until now. i split the mixture and mixed the nuts with raisins which were also a big hit at my husbands office. i will most definitely make them again.

Fantastic! Best cookies I've ever tasted. One thing I would suggest if your batter isn't mixing together like it should, keep adding tablespoons of water until it is perfect. The original recipe was a little dry.

Very good cookie, but similar to others I have had. Not sure the coconut did anything to the cookie. Best thing about this recipe is that it is super easy. Just grab all the ingredients and start pouring and mixing. Mine needed about 15 minutes to cook to a nice light brown color. Worthy of repeating.

Crowd pleaser! I'm a nurse and whenever we have a potluck or celebration of any sort, I'm pretty much not even allowed in the hospital without these scrumptious Cowboy Cookies! Sooo yummy! And I make mine BIG...after all, they should live up to their namesake, right? ;-
