I'm not sure why a lot of people said that their sauce wouldn't thicken. Mine thickened up easily, in fact, a little too easily for the first batch. I would babysit it while it's reaching the thickening point, because it ended up turning into concrete on the first try. Luckily, I had plenty of extra for the ingredients and made another batch. I think if your sauce isn't thickening, you're not really getting the full simmer like the recipe says. I had mine on near boiling until it started getting just a little saucier and then reduced the heat until it was just before the right consistency. It'll thicken up even more after you remove it from the heat. It was a bit of a learning process, but my first try making a sauce like this, and I have to say, it turned out excellent! I just had regular soy sauce, not low sodium, and no lemon zest, but it was still fine. A good blend of tangy, spicy, and sweet - and a very low cost/easy option for dinner!

Excellent! used apple juice from concentrate and only diluted the concentrate with 2/3 of the water. added a small amount of cornstarch to sauce at the end of cooking to thicken up even more. added another tsp of red chili flakes as we like very spicy foods. also increased honey to about one tablespoon. there was a discrepency in "cook time" and directions for baking the chicken--cook time listed as 40 min whereas directions bake legs for 30 min then flip for another 30 min. i split the difference, baking for 30 min and flip for 20. 10 more min would have made jerky out of outer layers of meat. don't be afraid of the heavy vinegar taste when the sauce ingredients are just mixed. as the sauce cooks down, the apple flavor comes out and the vinegary flavor mellows out. next time i will grill legs or even wings to incorporate that great grill flavor too. finger-licken' good! Could have eaten all twelve legs by myself!

Really good recipe. My girlfriend and I have made it twice now and we decided to follow the directions exactly the first time and it was so good. Pairs very nicely with white rice and sauteed carrots and zucchini in our opinion.

OH EM GEE!!!!! this is soooooo good!!! and so easy! I made the drumsticks and also some brown rice and asian veggies. I dabbled a little bit of the sauce on the rice and veggies and mixed them up. Made for a really great, amazing meal. All for under $10 too. I did leave off the sauce on my daughters drumsticks because she doesnt like spicy and these do have a kick, but they werent too hot at all. Really good. I didnt find anything in the sauce too overpowering.. maybe the soy sauce came through a little more than expected but it was great.
Ive made several recipes from here, several that I really liked, but ive never been compelled to immediately come review one until now. SO GOOD!

Out of all the recipes from food newtowork I've made. This is the only one that is absolutely disgusting. I couldn't even handle the smell of it cooking. Tossed it!!

This is the tastiest chicken I have ever made!! I read the other reviews before I made it and I, like the other reviewers, could not get my sauce to thicken. I just simply added a tsp of cornstarch and that did the trick. When I tasted the sauce directly from the saucepan, I thought it was a little tangy, so I added 2 tsps of brown sugar and 2 more tsps of honey. It still tasted tangy but when I poured it over the drumsticks, it was so delicious!!!! I think tasting it alone versus tasting it on the drumsticks is different. The only bad thing was that my smoke alarm kept going off (2 x because of all the smoke from the high heat of the oven. Next time, I am going to take my toaster oven and cook it outside so that my smoke alarm does not go off. I highly recommend this recipe!!!

Loved this recipe! Although I did add some extra ingredients: 1-2 TBLSP each of the following; Brown Sugar, Mustard, Ketchup, BBQ Sauce, and more Honey. This did help to thicken and not let the vinegar be overpowering.

made it with bone and skin and with out... it was amazing... I didn't have a problem with getting the sauce to thicken at all. Just reduce heat to a MED and stir constantly. I moved it to a separate bowl and once it cooled it was really thick like jelly... I will make this again!!!!

Very yummy! The sauce is AMAZING! I even forgot to add the butter to it and it still turned out super tasty, and a bit healthier! The sauce isn't very thick, so be prepared for that. I will definitely be making this again.
