this recipe is excellen, i did use beef stock instead of water, and i added fresh garlic since i love garlic in almost everything, and i used a can of ro-tel tomatoes for just a bit of a kick, such a great recipe that can be tweaked for almost anyones taste and preference, and easy to make, one of my favorites.

This recipe is the bomb. I used beef stock and water and 2 lbs of grilled sirloin steak cut into small pieces. I added 1/2 cup of medium barley, oregano and a bay leaf in addition to the listed ingredients. I put this in the crock pot at midnight and let it go on warm. At noon the next day, it was fantastic!

Soooo good; hearty, flavorful and one of my favorites from now on. It's after Christmas and cold where I live so this soup was perfect since turkey and ham have lost their appeal for the time being. My tweeks were the addition of beef broth and garlic. My husband had just come in from doing his chores outside and this soup warmed his tummy and now he is napping. I have stored the recipe in my Food Network Recipe Box for further use. Thank you so much for sharing.

A solid all-around beef-barley soup recipes. I up'ed it a bit by adding some beef soup base and leaving out the salt addition.

Absolutely Delicious!!!! I had beef barley at a friends the other night and my us and said babe you must try making beef barley it's a great soup soni quicklynlookedin Food Network. Y Although I tweaked the recipe a bit it still deserves a 5 star rating the basicnis what makes this soup and my tweaks just enhanced it. I tweaked the following
6 cups of water for 6 cups of beef broth, I used 1 1/2 lbs lean beef stew meat, 1/2 cup of barley, added fresh crushed garlic, and a deed 1 tblspn of browning sauce.

I am rating the recipe published in Ellie's cookbook The Food You Crave. She made several changes that make this soup one of the best healthy soup recipes I've ever made. Beef broth stands in for the water. She adds garlic and a bigger dose of barley. Stew meat is used to cut down on prep time. Fresh thyme is used in place of the dried thyme. It is absolutely delicious! I'd recommend buying the book for this modified recipe alone. The version above seems a little bland.

Lovely, and made the entire house smell great. I love seeing all of the changes/additions. I added garlic, and beef broth in place of the water. The entire family loved it.

I loved this recipe. I made a few minor changes. I used EVOO instead on Canola oil. I used beef broth instead of water. Lastly, I used stewing beef rather than the beef listed. The soup lasted three days and got BETTER with each passing day. I did have to add broth each day due to the Barley.

I did a crockpot version of this using stew meat, adding the bay leaf and garlic like suggested, a whole can of tomatoes and 16 oz. mushrooms, added for the last hour. It worked well.
