I have tried a number of the beef stew recipes here and this is the best, but still needed a little zing. I added 1/2 cup sundried tomatoes (chopped, along with 2 T. Worcestershire and 2 teaspoons of the Beef Roast seasoning from The Spice House in Chicago. It is great comfort food for a rainy day.

This soup was fabulous! Everyone went up for seconds, my oldest went up for 3rds. Husband loved it. Everyone was happy with the outcome of it. I nearly doubled the recipe, knowing that my family was going to enjoy it. Perfect for a much colder Michigan Sunday dinner. I used regular Idaho potatoes because that is what I had on hand, did not add any tomatoes, and accidentally used the entire can of tomato paste. Adding the additional tomato paste and no tomatoes was not my original intentions but it worked out fine. Also I made my own stock by boiling a couple of beefalo (cow and buffalo bread together- my sister owns a farm bones in water while we were at church in the morning. I added more or the vegetables, because my family loves extra carrots and potatoes in their soup. I didn't have any red wine vinegar on hand so I just made some by mixing regular vinegar with some red wine (equal parts. I let it simmer for nearly 4 hours. Will be making this one again during the Christmas season. As a mother of teens (1 in his second year of culinary arts this was a welcoming addition to my recipe box. Thank you.

I halved the recipe and cooked it in a crock pot. I also replaced about a cup of broth (beef with red wine for a richer flavor. Excellent for a winter's day.

My family declared this their favorite stew and my picky 7 yr old, said it's her favorite anything. I used beef stock and replaced 2 C of it with red wine & it's wonderful! Well worth the time & effort!

This was a great recipe for beef stew. The beef turned out very tender. We added 2/3 a bottle of beer (pale ale in place of some of the broth and some porcini mushroom broth (soak 1/2 c dried porcini mushrooms in boiling water for 20 minutes, then add the mushrooms and the broth to the stew. This is my new favorite stew recipe!

it was pretty good - but I think it would have been better if I used beef broth instead of chicken broth.

This is so incredibly good. My dad is very particular about his beef stew, and this won me RAVE reviews! I've made this twice now and will make it many more times!
