I read the other reviews, but really love corn bread so I had to give these a try. I agreed that they were initially tedious, but once I came up with a system they were quick, easy, delicious and oh so worth the effort. Two substitutions I made were to agree with another reviewer and substitute almonds for the corn flakes, along with almond extract in place of anise. The somewhat savory flavor will be a wonderful contrast to all the sweet treats on our holiday platter.

So i was super exited about making these because they look so festive on the picture, it took forever to roll into balls and make a hole in the midlle and cut and put the corflakes on!!! These cookies better be the BOMB! i thought to myself... then came the taste test!!! Then i was SUPER disappointed!! :( They were dry and tasteless

I thought that these cookies turned out great. They are so festive looking and that's what I wanted. They were a little time consuming, that is why I didn't give them 5 stars. I had a terrible time putting the cornflakes on after soaking them in the egg whites. After one batch, I decided to brush the cookies with the egg whites then I put the cornflakes on dry.........worked beautifully!

After reviewing comments from 'not worth the time', I decided to adjust the recipe a bit. I used 2 sticks of butter, 1 cup of sugar, 1-1/4 tsp. vanilla and 1/2 tsp. anise. I would omit the cornflakes completely next time. I did it on one tray and found it very tedious. After they came out of the oven, the cornflakes didn't look nice. The second tray was done without the flakes. Be sure to cut slits in the cookie before you bake them. Make them a bit deep so they show up after baking. They did not turn out golden, I guess because of the yellow cornmeal but when dusted with powdered sugar, they looked lovely and had a tender texture.

This recipe takes a lot longer than anticipated and turn out terribly dry and somewhat tasteless. The cornflakes are an interesting touch but it is quite tedious to add them especially considering the disappointing end product.
