Oh my goodness! BEST FRENCH DIP EVER!!! Loved it, I did cook it longer b/c I am the only one in my house that likes rare-medium rare things, but the onion dip, it made it. The au jus was awesome. I don't know why people are complaining that it's messy, isn't that the point of a french dip, it's not supposed to be a "clean" eat, never had one that wasn't at least a little messy. I used wavy chips for the side and we used the dip with those, it does make a lot of dip so either half it or figure out what else to do with it, such as with chips or like someone else suggested they used it on sandwiches for the next couple of days, which is what I am going to do. Like some others I will never buy onion dip again, I will make this one instead!

I really didn't care about the onion spread one way or the other, but I have to say that the au jus was remarkable in my opinion. I like rare beef very much. But here's a hint, I think it best to slice with a meat slicer if you have one, no matter how rare or not you cook your meat. Yes, we have a meat slicer. My husband has EVERYTHING. Great recipe. Makes lots.

These were amazing!! Granted, I changed the recipe to make it simpler and faster, but if they were that good with my changes, then following the recipe exactly would be even more amazing!! I didn't do the beef, but used deli roast beef. I realize this probably does not compare, but with the sauce and onion spread, I was happy. I added the garlic used for the paste into the butter when making the au jus. And I plan on using the left over onion spread (it made a ton! on BLTs today and turkey sandiwches through the week. I will be making these again!

I loved this. I used the spread for chips and it was the most delicious dip ever. I wonder if the posters actually used the exact ingredients listed. I loved how rare the roast beef turned out... Medium Rare is how I like it. Infact I am using that as my roast beef recipe for our Christmas dinner. Yes this was super messy but its a french dip with a ton of onion spread on it... What is not messy about that? Get dirty and enjoy!

It was just ok. I didn't mind the work because I had a day off and felt like cooking. During the prep as I tasted each component I thought it tasted a little off but hoped maybe it would all come together once assembled. Much to my disappointment it didn't. I was excited about the onion spread, as I love onions but it just tasted strange, maybe it was the vinegar? The meat was really good, very moist and tender, but the juice was very bland. I had only chicken broth, not beef as was called for, so that may have been part of it. I will say though I did expect something better after going through all of that work for a sandwich. I definitely would not make this again.

Everything came out great! I disagree with other posters, it says total time 3 hours 40 min, so id assume it's not gonna be a quick fix? Also if you're having problems with the roast beef, cook it a bit longer.. that's just what the recipe suggests. Onion spread was delicious, I used top round roast, and it was great. I added a few different spices and, an actual rub on the roast when I put it in the oven. I'll definitely use the spread again, and cook the roast beef again like this! Thanks for the recipe!

The onion spread is awesome and I'll never use store-bought french onion dip again! The beef was good and will make it on weekends. However, on weeknights I would just buy some deli beef, add a few spices and warm in beef broth.

I agree with some of the other reviews, this was a ton of work, and the meat did turn out a little too rare. The onion spread however was delicious and will be making that again, but as far as the meat, deli sliced roast beef would have had the same effect.

For as much work that went into making this recipe, I was disappointed with the results. I agree with another poster, it makes A LOT of onion spread. The flavor of the onion spread was great. The meat is too rare for my family, so I cooked it a bit longer. It was done just right for our taste, but that made it a bit too tough to eat on a sandwich. I still don't see where it says to do anything with the parsley. One thing for sure was, 35 minutes was too long to cook the onions. Mine were done in 15 minutes. So as time consuming as this was I probably won't be making this again.
