I make these every few years for my Polish Christmas party. My family loves them. I especially love the cookie base.

I'm not even aware of what candied orange peel is, so I've always used marmalade. They come out fine!

I was just treated to these at a company party and wished I'd taken more than one. Fruity, sweet, just a touch of tartness, buttery, delicious. Well worth the effort. Can't wait to make them myself.

I made these last year, got approval from a Polish-American friend, and the family LOVED them. Leave the recipe be. It's flawless. I'm getting ready to do it all over again tomorrow morning.

Excellent recipe! Using the parchment paper made these easy to remove. I wrapped each bar in plastic wrap to give away as gifts and they look beautiful, as pictured. The only thing I might suggest is using heaping half cups of each of the dry ingredients, as I found that the fruit mixture just barely covered the cookie.

These cookies were wonderful using the recipe as written. For all those who found they needed to adjust the recipe to please their own taste, isn't that what we all do with most recipes? I would rather them keep their preferences to themselves and let everyone else make their own modifications, if necessary.

Followed the recipe exactly with the exception of the candied orange peel. I couldn't find any to buy and didn't have the time to make my own. I just added a little more of the other fruits to compensate.

It turned out well, and I will add this to the "recipe box" for holidays.

Easy to make, beautiful to look stand delicious to the taste. What else could one ask for? Thanks for a great addition to my cookie recipe file. As for the remarks of some other reviewers--get a life!! There are no laws about when to eat them or how you spell the name and if you want to change the whole recipe give it a new name. Keep up the good work, Food Network Cooks.

I made these last night, for the first time, and they are a little time consuming, but the results are good.

The recipe in its original form is good, but the bars are very sweet. If you would like to cut down on the sweetness, I would recommend the following changes:

    1. Cut the 1 cup of sugar in the dough to a little over 3/4 cup
    2. When making the fruit compote, totally eliminate the 4 tsp. of sugar. Since you are using dried fruit and orange juice, there is already a ton of natural sugar.
    3. In the compote you could also cut the OJ down from 1 cup to 3/4 cup and use 1/4 cup of water for the balance.

    Other suggestions:
    1. You can also use almond extract in place or with the vanilla extract in the batter
    2. Add a dribble of Grand Marnier either to the compote when cooking, or afterwards (it can be brushed on top of the finished bars, this finishes off the orange flavor and gives it a little zing.
    3. Cut the bars small (2" by 2" because they are heavy

But all in all, a good recipe.

Having Polish grandparents on my mother's side, we traditionally made these "mazurek",(the correct spelling which is a flat cake that is baked only at Easter time! But I could see how an enthusiastic food research person might want to include them for Christmas, something with dried fruit and all. They are very easy to make, and tasty too, and they will last a month if you sprinkle them with rum like my grandmother did! If you can keep them that long! Have a great holiday!
