This soup was really good. I thought it was great without the yogurt on top, but even better with it. I made it in less than 6 hours, maybe 4. Used a smoked turkey leg from Diestel i bought at my local co-op. This was a budget friendly recipe as well. I did add two small cloves of chopped garlic, and the carrot tops to the soup. I also used half broth in place of half of the water. I would use all chick broth next time. The turkey leg was super hot when i took it out of the cooker. Had to let it cool off in a dish, but once i did, i think i got every piece off of it you could possibly get because it was so easy.
I had a Rogue Hazelnut Brown Nectar (brown ale with it and it was perfect.

really really fantastic. I asked my uncle for the smoked turkey legs from thanksgiving and it worked beautifully. I didnt have to change the recipe one bit either. So many different textures and a very filling soup. I thought the multigrain bread sort of tasted like an afterthough, but the second time around I toasted it and it was WAY beter. The dollup of yogurt at the end really completed the flavors.
make this. it is comfort food at its best and good looking enough to serve guests.
I hate when people dont make the soup right and then give it 2 stars:(

Very good soup and so nourishing. But I skip the parsley and use the whole leek. For 6 cups of water I use a tablespoon of salt, and a good shake of cayenne pepper flakes to give it just a little bite. I use half a smoked sausage, and when the soup is done I cut up the sausage in small pieces, and blend up the soup. Hot, smooth, full of flavor and so comforting.

I wouldn't make this soup again as it was very bland. Only after the addition of garlic powder, ham & cheddar cheese was it tolerable. I did use 3 ham hocks instead of the turkey leg since I couldn't find one & it still didn't help with the flavor. I was also only able to fit 6 cups of water in my crock but it came out to the perfect thick consistency. Broth or stock would be a more flavorful substitute...

I've made this many times & my whole family loves it. I only use the split peas in the bag-I don't use frozen peas. I also use ham. It's so good & I believe since it's done in the crock pot slowly over 6 hrs.brings out all the flavors and melts the meats into the soup. I also add garlic to the soup & it melts into the other flavors of the soup. If you haven't tried this you def have to if you love split pea soup you will never make it any other way. Even if you already have your own recipe make that in the crock pot (slow cooker you'll def do it that way from now on.

This was the best and easiest soup I have made. The turkey was great and made it hearty and filling. Took it to work and people get asking me for the recipe. One person said they weren't crazy about spilt pea soup but absolutely loved this version. Plan on making it tomorrow for the second time in a month.

What work? You throw 8 ingredients into a crockpot and walk away until you fish the smoked turkey leg out, take the meat off the bone to add it back in along with some fresh chopped parsley at the end? And that dollop of yogurt added before serving gives the soup a nice little "kick".
I used smoked ham hocks this go 'round as that is what my husband requested but will be making it with the smoked turkey leg in the future for added protein and considerably less fat.
I did make ONE alteration: I substituted a near full bottle of white wine (sans one small glass for the cook in place of as many cups of water. It gave the soup and added dimension that I will always use in the future.
This soup was DELICIOUS, EASY and totally IDIOT-PROOF. I HIGHLY recommend it.

A lot more work than my version for just a different flair. I've made mine for years and my girls jump for joy - literally. Rinse my peas throw in ham hocks or better yet left over ham bone with some meat still on salt, pepper garlic to taste, water or chicken broth; rinse my peas throw in crockpot altogther leave on low and ready when I come home after work and their practices. I will try the thyme in mine next time.

Wow...I had a craving for some fall comfort food and this soup fit the bill! I followed the recipe almost exactly. the only change was i used a 1/2 tsp of dry thyme as i didnt have fresh. the turkey leg was surprisingly easy to find at the store and does pack a punch of flavor. I also think the frozen peas added a nice change to the soups texture... i just tossed em in frozen and let them cook for a few. I loved this soup so much that im currently making my second batch for my parents :
ps. I followed this soup with Emeril's apple coffe cake with crumb topping and brown sugar glaze... OMG. i win wife of the year tonight. hubby even brought leftovers to work at the fire station for the guys. try both of these recipes!!
