You can create up to five timers

Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons peanut oil
  • 2 cloves garlic, chopped
  • 2 tablespoons finely grated peeled fresh ginger
  • 1/2 cup dry sherry
  • 1/2 cup hoisin sauce
  • 1/2 cup ketchup
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons Vietnamese chili-garlic sauce
  • 2 teaspoons soy sauce
  • 2 teaspoons dark sesame oil

Directions

Heat the oil in a small saucepan over high heat. Add the garlic and ginger and cook over high heat until fragrant, about 2 minutes. Whisk in the sherry, hoisin sauce, ketchup, chile-garlic sauce, soy sauce, and sesame oil and bring to a boil. Remove from heat and let cool.

    I needed a sauce to serve with my first attempt at making chicken katsu at home and I think it comes pretty close to the sauce that they serve at Hawaiian restaurants here in Vegas. I followed the recipe exactly at first except I didn't add the sesame oil because I didn't have any on hand. After tasting it, I did add about a tablespoon of brown sugar just to make sure it was sweet enough for my tastes.
    To Wiz: I had the same thoughts you did about the sauce being called "sweet and sour" because it has no added pineapple juice or vinegar but after making it, I found that it is surprisely both sweet and sour. Both the hoisin and the ketchup both have tons of sugar and vinegar in them.

    This is my first comment and post. I haven't even made this "Sweet & Sour" BBQ Sauce but I can tell that something is missing. Mainly the "Sweet & Sour". I don't see any ingredients that will make this sauce "Sweet & Sour". Honey, sugar, vinegar etc not listed. Maybe the title is wrong. I have used some of the ingredients listed to make a char siu sauce which might be what this is. If you make it, go ahead and let us know if I'm right or not.
