Ingredients

For the ginger syrup:

  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1 2-inch piece fresh ginger, peeled and diced

For the drink:

  • 1 1/2 ounces apple brandy
  • 3/4 ounce apple cider vinegar
  • 1/2 ounce orange liqueur
  • 1 tablespoon honey
  • Star anise, for garnish (optional)

Directions

Make the syrup: Combine the sugar and 1/2 cup water in a saucepan over medium heat; cook, stirring, until the sugar dissolves. Remove from the heat and let cool. Transfer the syrup to a food processor or blender, add the ginger and puree until smooth. Let sit 2 to 3 hours, then strain the syrup through a fine-mesh strainer lined with cheesecloth.

Make the drink: Combine the brandy, vinegar, orange liqueur, honey and about 1 tablespoon of the ginger syrup in a cocktail shaker filled with ice. Shake well, then strain into a rocks glass filled with ice. Garnish with star anise, if desired.

I was looking for something different, and this drink delivered. It will scrape any other taste right off your palate and replace it with something you'll never forget. My family now calls the face you make after drinking this one "The Keats." Try if you're adventurous, or serve to a family member you would like to leave your home sooner than later... but get a picture of their "Keats" face when they take the first sip. Priceless.
