I made this for Thanksgiving this year and it was very good. I made a couple of adjustments. I used half butter and half shortening instead of all butter because shortening just adds something to the texture of a cake. I used half chopped dates and half raisins instead of all raisins because my family likes dates and I read several other applesauce cake recipes that called for dates. Also, I drizzled a simple powdered sugar glaze over the cake instead of dusting it with the powdered sugar because I think it made a prettier cake.

I read the other reviewers comments about the batter not baking properly. At 40 minutes, the center was still liquid. It took an additional 30 minutes, and the center is raw.I think that the amount of flour must be off.All and all, very disapointed.

Moist & dense, this hearty cake is better than spice cake! I added chopped dates instead of raisins. Use a bundt pan (or 2 med loaf pans, as the large loaf pan took FOREVER to cook through.

The flavor of this cake was excellent, but I only got to have one piece because after baking it for longer than the suggested time in a loaf pan, the whole inside fell in--it was still batter! Perhaps the given times were for the tube pan, but it definitely needs longer than even an hour for the loaf pan. The piece I did try (from the edge was awesome! I will have to tinker with the baking time and/or pan and see if that makes a difference.

This cake stayed moist for days! Great flavor and not too sweet. Warmed and served w/ ice cream. WOW!

This cake came out very moist and sweet. My whole family enjoyed it and it was just perfect with powdered sugar sprinkled over the top. The only trouble I had was getting the center to cook properly, which may just have had something to do with my oven.
