I made another red velvet cake recipe but I saw on YouTube it was really red but when I made it it was burgundy colour. I added more colouring and after baking it went red. I used this icing and I followed the recipe. After creaming the butter and icing sugar I beated in the flour mixture then suddenly the mixture went runny and curdled. it was a disaster. I throwed the icing away and used lorraine pascale cream cheese icing and it worked!

The icing was GREAT!
Don't know much about actual cake. It was ok but not amazing.
I did taste the batter before putting into the oven and added some more sugar and vanilla extract. I also added some vegetable oil since it was a little bit stiff.
Overall, good recipe. :

I have made this cake before, but had throw it out. That red food coloring is the most awful stuff I have ever tasted, it leaves bitter taste in your mouth. I am from Europe, and we dont use food coloring. All these cakes with bright colors cant possibly be good for you. I dont want my kids to have it either.

Tried this recipe for Thanksgiving because my mom is in the hospital so I couldn't get my hands on the family recipe which I usually make. This cake was very dense and had an unusual (not bad, BUT NOT tasty! taste. One friend of mine believed it was due to the food coloring flavor but no one else seemed to know why. I did not use this frosting because I prefer a cream cheese frosting. I would definitely NOT recommend this cake or make this cake again. There are better recipes. For mine, I even cut down the 2 fl ounces of red food coloring to 1 fl ounce and used another tablespoon of cocoa. For a red velvet cake, this recipe has very little cocoa. It was also very heavy ingredients and LOTS of each of them. Not tasty. The color was pretty and I did not have a problem with it falling flat but it was not good so none of that mattered.

The color was wonderful but the cake was flat the flavor was weak. I forget to decrease the shortening, next time I will increase the cocoa vanilla and double the recipe. I followed the recipe to the letter I Added each egg one at a time, alternated the liquid with the flour, used cake flour, but it still was a flat cake. Does anyone have any suggestion?

I followed everything this recipe said to do word by word. The batter was NOT that good. The cake fell in the middle, then fell apart when I tried to frost it. And the frosting was worse. It wouldn't get thick, I even tried to refrigerate the frosting to see if that would help, it just oozed off the cake. If you're looking for a good recipe for a party or something, this is not it. The up side is, I laughed with my family, at the oozing blob on a plate!

Sorry to say that I followed all instructions! Way too much
Red food coloring!! The cake layers were tasteless and
Heavy, they actually fell apart and the frosting was even
Worse! The only bright spot was spending time with my
Granddaughter!

I just made this cake It's still cooling, but i've tasted what spilled over. All I can say is amazing! There are a few thing that I did change. I added more cocoa powder in 1 tsp, and only 1oz of the red food dye. I think I folded to much which made the cake sunk in while cooking, but that a quick fix after it cools just freeze then cut it to make it flat. I didn't have a 9in pan so I use the throw away kind, but next time I will use a spring pan that way that way not spillage.
