I loved the icing. Most Red Velvet Cakes are made with a cream cheese frosting. This one was different and delicious.

This cake was really good. Had a great taste. I did substitute butter for shortening. Once my family tasted it they thought I had purchased the cake from a store. Now they know I can cook. Will use this recipe from here on out. However... I did not use this icing. I used a buttercream icing, and mixed a little bit of cream cheese into the icing, and it was delcious!!!!

THIS WAS A GREAT CAKE. EVERYTHING WAS GOOD, BUT IT GOT STUCK TO THE BOTTOM BECAUSE WE DIDN'T USE ENOUGH NON-STICK SPRAY.

HORRIBLE! HORRIBLE! HORRIBLE! I selected this recipe because it seemed simple enough. When mixing my ingredients, I noticed that I only had one ounce of food coloring. I proceeded anyway.....total disappointment. I followed the recipe exactly the way it was written.
This cake has no taste other than the store bought icing I put on it. I only used one ounce of food coloring and I could taste it more than the cake. I will not make this one again nor will I suggest it to anyone else.....Yuck!

Just made this cake...WOW! The only thing I did differently was making a buttercream frosting instead of the 7 minute only because I don't like 7 minute. It is moist, and just super dooper!!!
    Will definitely make it again!!

I'm originally from Virginia. While growing up my mother was famous among family & friends for making the best Red Velvet Cake! She passed on many years ago, but I've tried to keep her Red Velvet Cake legacy going. It's now my daughter's favorite cake. I don't know where mother got her recipe (that was at least 35 years ago, but it's almost exactly like Gale Gand's recipe! This is the only other place I've seen this frosting recipe, but if you've never tried it, you should! I cannot imagine putting cream cheese frosting on my Red Velvet Cake. It's probably very good, but to me it would never taste right!

Fabulous! I made this into cupcakes for my niece's graduation. They were a big hit, OK she's 10 yrs old but even the adults loved them. The cake was moist (don't over cook it and the icing was easy to make and very smooth, no one noticed it wasn't cream cheese. I'm making it again this weekend for my Brother's birthday (request from the kids so I guess it was good.
    Thanks Gale!
