This recipe is similar to the recipe that has beened passed down thru my family, it is a difficult cake to make but well worth the effort. In my opinion it comes out better if you make it in a bundt or 9x13 as opposed to layers and its important to use 2 bottles of red food coloring. watch it while it is cooking because its easy to overcook it and then it does become dry. As for the frosing you have to make sure you cool the flour/milk mixture competely or it will be runny. We always use granulated sugar in it not confectioners if you make it right its the best cake and frosting you'll ever eat. Don't give up its worth mastering. Its the go to birthday cake for my entire family (and its a big one trust me!

I didn't make the cake, only the frosting and it was awful. I followed the directions carefully and ended up with soup. I tried adding more confectioner's sugar and couldn't get the stuff thick enough. It slid off the cake and acted more like a lubricant. It was tasty but totally ineffective!

Was so excited about this recipe and was so disappointed. Cake was so dry and had no flavor!! I was very careful to follow recipe. Really the cake tasted like the shortening. Cooked in electric oven perhaps a gas oven would do better. I would not waste my time on this recipe again.

First of all, I never met a cake I didn't like...until this one. The one tsp cocoa must have been a misprint, because there is no way one tsp could flavor a cake. The red color was so red it was scary. I was afraid it would attract vampires. Dry, no flavor at all. It was not worth the time, effort or money. Choose a different recipe or buy a cake at a bakery.

I made this cake today, Forth of July, for my family. It was terrible. I followed every direction and the cake was burnt on the bottom and the sides, also the frosting was a gloppy mess; it couldn't even stay on the cake, finally the taste; this cake had the WORST taste out of every single cake I've had. The food coloring was WAY TOO OVERPOWERING which made the cake taste terrible. I will never make this cake ever again.

This cake tastes great! I made it for my sister's birthday and everybody loved it. I substituted 1 cup of butter for the shortening, but other than that I followed the recipe exactly.
The cake has a great color and flavor. I highly recommend it.

I blame the shortening. The batter taste like straight shortening. I almost didn't even stick it in the oven. I did anyway. Upon tasting, I was disgusted. I spit it out and threw the cake away.

After baking so many great recipes from Food Network, this Red Velvet cake just fell short. I followed the recipe with the exception of using 1oz. of red food coloring instead of 2 ozs. (which was more than enough as the cake was perfectly red. I will say is that the cake was moist. The flavor of the red velvet did not come through and the icing was absolutely awful. It was runny and tasted like butter. I am certainly glad that I didn't waste my time baking this next week for Easter.
