When I was making this cake, it seemed like a very simple and nice recipe. However, when I took the cake out of the oven, it was a mouldy green colour with a hint of red in it. So next time I think I should add more red to it. But I thought the taste of the cake was quite nice. Also, when I made the frosting, it turned out a disaster and I didn't know what I had done wrong because the mixture went a bit lumpy as the flour wasn't getting smooth in the pan and it was also very runny. Has this happened to anyone else? If it has, do you know what I have done wrong? Thank You :

I thought this recipe was very good but I added 5 tbsp of yogurt (greek or plain and they tuned out very moist. Make sure when you make the frosting to read ALL the directions first because I forgot to boil the flour and milk and ended up throwing it out, but overall great recipe!

Yes, this is almost the same recipe as the Waldorf Red Velvet. It's not a chocolate cake. My grandmother made this for my birthday every year in the 1950's/60's. The frosting was this frosting and never cream cheese! I've just made 150 cupcakes and frosting with this recipe and they were delicious. It's classic Red Velvet. Follow the recipe.

It taste super good. You need to use all 2 ounces of the food coloring, I used one cause I though 2 was to too much and it came out pink. At least it tasted good, that is all that matters anyway. The directions were a little bit mis leading. I had to re try because the first time it didn't work. Read the directions before you start and make sure you under stand them.

The ckae taste really good! But, I find the frosting a little weird. It was just to buttery and not thaat swwet. But overall very nice. I think I might have just messed up on the frosting.

the cake had very little flavor. I used 1 ounce red food color instead of 2 and the color turned out perfectly. but the taste was very dissapointing

GOT GREAT REVIEWS FROM THIS CAKE!! IN FACT, I DOUBLED THIS RECIPE YESTERDAY SO I COULD MAKE 2 CAKES FOR VALENTINE PRESENTS. I DID NOT USE THE ICING RECIPE INSTEAD I USED MY RECIPE THAT HAS WHITE SUGAR INSTEAD OF POWDERED SUGAR. I WILL MAKE THIS CAKE AGAIN AND AGAIN.

it came out tough for me. i attribute this to the shortening. i substituted the the shortening with vegetable oil the second time around and it came out much better. so moist! had to use a little more than a cup of vegetable oil (about a 1 1/4 cups. also changed the frosting to a home cream cheese frosting and it really kicked it off. i gave it 2 stars as was and up'd it to 4 my way. give it a try!
