I was so disappointed with this recipe. I have baked cakes in the past and been very successful. This cake looked good but tasted terrible! It was almost tough. The frosting was awful. It was more like a glaze. I can't understand WHY CANNOT I NOT FIND A GOOD RED VELVET CAKE!!! Don't waste your time and energy, find a better recipe and let me know. Luckily, I made this cake for my own birthday and not for someone else!

I HAVE BEEN LOOKING FOR YEARS FOR THE BEST RED VELVET CAKE WITHOUT A CREAM CHEESE FROSTING. THIS IS, AS I REMEBER THE CAKE TO BE AS A CHILD.MY SISTER USED TO MAKE IT,LOST THE RECIPE.
NOW THIS IS AS GOOD AND VELVETY AS I REMBERBER IT . SO HAPPY TO HAVE TRIED THIS RECIPE.
I DID ADD MORE COCO TO THE CAKE BY 1 OE 2 TBSP, IT WAS HANDS DOWN DELICIOUS. IT WAS ALL GONE IN ONE DAY.
NEXT TIME I WILL MAKE IT A 3 OR 4 LAYER CAKE. YUMMMM!
ALSO I USED FOR THE VERY FIRST TIME COCONUT OIL INSTED OF THE SHORTING. I WILL USE IT AGAIN IT MADE AN EXTREMELY MOIST CAKE.

Well I thought was a little dry but it didn't ruin my cake. My frosting turned out very well and my made one for my aunt for her birthday and she ended up LOVING it!!!

The cake came out very dry and the frosting is not the best I ended using a cream cheese recipe instead. I have made this in the past I was very disappointed because it is my favorite.

The cake was definitely moist but had an odd aftertaste. I'm not quite sure how to describe it but it definitely stood out as a bit bizarre. Plus the aftertaste stuck around for a bit. Not too sure I'll be using this recipe again. I've had plenty of red velvet cake, and this one definitely does not impress.

I used this frosting on a carrot cake once and it turned out fabulous. But I used this again and I forgot to add the butter.

The cake turned out perfect! I am an experienced home-taught cook and specialize in many different types of cooking. I was a bit concerned from some of the other reviews about it rising too much and falling over the sides of the pan but that wasn't the case for me. It did rise quite a bit during the first half of baking but it starts to receed a little during the second half of baking. Also, be sure to use shortening to grease the pans and the cake will come out perfectly. I did, however, choose not to make the frosting recipe for this cake. Instead, I made my own white chocolate frosting and it was amazing! As long as you follow the recipe exactly as its written you should have no problems. One more thing to note is when mixing the food coloring with the cocoa it does not make an actual paste so don't be discouraged you did that part wrong and definitely don't start adding more cocoa.

I am an experienced cook and baker, & made hundreds of cakes perfectly, but this was HORRIBLE! By far the worst cake, or anything else, I've ever made. I followed the suggestions & used more cocoa & oil not shortening, but otherwise followed exactly. It came out like a fallen souffle and the consistency of a very dense dry brownie with the edges raised. I've never seen anything like it. It wouldn't come out of the greased pan either. We threw it in the trash. I can't imagine that I did something wrong as I'm very careful and precise, but maybe I did because this can't be the correct recipe. I LOVE red velvet cake and have to find some way to redeem myself after this mess. Good luck to everyone else though, maybe it really was just me that was the problem...?
