Have no idea why these poor reviews. I make this annually for My Son's birthday (Feb 13th, and this is the exact recipe I remember making as a teen. While others were good, they were not the same.

This is a very old recipe which my grandmother made often. She taught me how to bake back in the 60's. The baking soda and vinegar need to be combined before folding into the batter.

    Thank you Chef Gand!

Superb Red Velvet Cake... Very easy and smelled wonderful when it was finished.
Very impressed. I have made many of these and this one was the best.

    PS. I followed the directions!

I know the Gale Gand is an incredible baker, so I want to find out what possible
mistake I could have made, because this cake I unfortunately had to throw away.
The ingredients added up to a high cost cake, due to the red food coloring,
    2 ounces cost me over $6.00 :(
The cake was so dry I could hardy swallow it, and a million crumbs.
I had forcasted to my friends to come over for cake and coffee, well I
    was so embarrassed.
They also tasted too much like baking soda,
    I follow the directions exactly.
    What could go wrong?

okay.. uhm when i first made the cake is tasted okay but the minute it got cold the favor totaly tranceformed. It tasted like play-doe.
This cake was so bitter my dog spit up the little pice i gave her. Jezzy next time im just going to use the Betty Crocker recipe. I know i didnt just make it wrong because i dont know if you know but all your comments are negitive. This cake doesnt even deserve the star rating i gave it. im sorry but its true.
the only thing i enjoyed about this cake is making it.

This is the worst cake I have ever baked. The batter did not "pour" into the pan first of all. I used solid vegetable shortening, because it was not specified. Also the cocoa powder was not specified if it should be sweetened or unsweetened, I used unsweetened. I don't even no what to say. I made this to serve for Christmas Eve. and I just through it away!

I followed the recipe to the T; when I took the cake out of the oven it sunk in the middle (like a souffle. It tasted great but I could not serve it. I used Bobbie Flays recipe instead and had better results. I think it has to do with the vinegar and baking soda going into the batter at the same time (last step in the process. Sorry can't recommend it to novice bakers (which I am.

I live in San Jose, Costa Rica. I have tried this recipe twice..... the flavor and texture of the cake are just perfect.... The only problem I have had both times is the cake makes an inverted cone in the middle of it while cooking......The first time I thought it was because I oppend the oven door in advanced, It happend the same during the second time. I did open the door 35 minutes later, the cake was cooked, but the inverted cone was there.

I am wondering, if some one knows why this is happening to the cake? I would really apprecite any advice...!!! Catalina
