The sugar is not forgotten - I've made a Christmas cookie recipe for over 35 years that calls for the same ingredients. We called them Danish Pastries when I was a kid, and they have apricot preserves and a walnut in the center of a similarly shaped cookie. I think because there is sugar in the center, this is where the sweetness is to come from...adding sugar to the original recipe kind of detracts from the fact that it is to be a FLAKY cookie, not a sugar cookie, per se. It is boggling my mind that people are being so rude and accusing Food Network of writing the recipe incorrectly. It is not wrong...mix it up, chill the dough til it is firm and then roll it out...easy!

I loved this recipe when I tried it after watching Ms. Gands on the foodnetwork show years ago. I downloaded and printed the recipe after watching the show and the recipe has never called for any other suger other than the 1 cup of red sugar. I think it's great that others have turned this cookie into more of a sugar cookie on a stick. I have also added powered sugar, but never the vanilla, will try. I too hav family who like the cookie sweeter.

Obviously someone made a mistake when they typed up this recipe, the sugar & flavoring for the dough is missing. I have made these cookies @ least 2 dozen times, I make for other holidays also & just change the color of the sugar & M&M's (red & blue for the 4th of July, black & orange for Halloween. When making the dough I add 1/2 C of powdered sugar to the butter when mixing & then add 2 teaspoons of real vanilla (or lemon juice & zest after I add the egg. I also roll the dough out onto regular white sugar, instead of flour, when I'm ready to cut them. Try this and I'm sure you'll love them, just as all of my friends & family do. Also, sometimes I'll make this same recipe but add 2 teaspoons of orange juice & zest of 1 orange, use a fluted rectangle cookie cutter, bake as directed & when they have cooled I'll dip 1/2 of the cookie in melted milk or dark chocolate....delicious! Good luck.

With most recipes on the food network, I read the reviews before trying the recipe. These cookies are beautiful and delicious but you have the add SUGAR. I too think they forgot to add sugar when posting this recipe. I add one cup of conf. sugar and a little vanilla. The sugar on top of the cookies is not enough to sweeten these cookies. Try these, your family and friends with be impressed!

I followed the suggestion of others and added 1 cup powdered sugar to the dough. I have to say this dough held together well to cut out the pinwheels but it is really nothing more than glorified pie crust. Make a pretty cookie though. I thought I had red sugar and did not so used green on some and then I thought of using red jello which worked great. I didn't have the M&M's so on the green ones I used the handle of a wooden spoon, moistened it and picked up the red jello to make my "center" to the poinsettia.

These cookies are soooooooooo easy even though they look like you spent alot of time and trouble on them. They are great for a cookie exchange. In the summer I change them up and put red and blue sugar with red or blue m & ms and make them 4th of July pinwheels. I am making them this year as well for our neighborhood cookje exhcange. IM the new kid on the block so they are all in for a Christmas suprise with these cookies. I cant wait and wish I was making them today !!! Try these cookies because they are sooooooooooo easy and they are not too sweet and make a very festive presentation

For the benefit of others so that their precious time, effort and ingredients aren't wasted please add some sugar to this recipe and reprint it. How foolish I was to assume that the decorative sugar would give enough sweetness. They require some effort and would have been perfect if they had been edible. I'll bet that there was a mistake when it was printed.

add 1 cup powdered sugar to the cream cheese when whipping. Add one teaspoon vanilla before adding egg. Cookies come out tasting like they should - sweet!

I tried these at Christmas time, and I did not like the way they turned out at all... the dough was definitely not sweet enough, but that was not may major complaint. When I folded them as directed and baked them, the M&M dye bled onto the cookie dough, and they did not stay together. After tasting them, I didn't even finish the batch. I won't make them again.

I mixed the dough and tasted a pinch and realized something was wrong! I came back to the computer and saw the reviews. Even though I know it was the wrong time to add sugar and vanilla - after adding flour - I did, but I don't think anything could save these cookies. The cookies just tasted like a big wad of dough in your mouth. I am very disappointed in Food Network for not checking the reviews and fixing whatever is wrong with this recipe - I count on your site for good recipes! Plus the fact of wasted time and material - I doubled the recipe so all that flour, eggs, cream cheese - in the TRASH!!!!
