I made this cake for a bbq that had at least 30 kids that were going to be attending. I cut down on both the sugar and the candy. It was horrible! I tried to make sure the gummy candies were below the batter but somehow they rose up and were so burnt and sticky, I had to cut all the edges off the cake and it almost took a sledge hammer to get them out of the loaf pans. The cooking time had to be shortened because the top was burning. I tried to salvage some of the cake but will never try this again....terrible!

It is interesting that the one reviewer didn't try the cake. I had to pass this recipe around as soon as I saw it. Fruit cake is a grand tradition in our family and it's hard to get the kids to enter into it. Our recipe consist of lard, 2 pounds of candied fruit and a great deal of brandy. Not an easy thing to get kids to like. Now when we sit down to our fruit cake, I have this cake set aside for the kids. They match our coffee with coke and although it may not be a healthy tradition it is a fun one. Every member of my family has a copy. The high rating is for a great tasting cake, fun for the kids, and handing down traditions!

Any recipe that takes 6 cups of sugar to be "kid friendly" has just totally given up. Why not just give them a bag of white sugar and a spoon?
