So i decided to make a friend and family favorite when visiting a friend at her new home. i go thru all the trouble of making this cake with all the steps and time consuming ingredients to have the cake OVERFLOW IN THE OVEN!!!!!! the directions say 2 NINE INCH ROUNDS well you need more like 3 or 4, then on top of the smoking kitchen and messy oven i have now, the cake stuck to the pan and i ended up having to chop it up and make a truffle display instead. It also took wayyyyy longer than 1/2 hr to cook. I love this cake. dont get to wrong. it was the most delicious, moist , yummy cake ive ever had but someone needs to change the recipe on here!!! i will def try this again but next time im separating it into 4 round pans.

German Chocolate Cake is a family fave for many generations, but would suggest using 2-1/2 C of Cake Flour. The original 50 yr old classic German Chocolate recipe can be found in Betty Crocker's Cookbook: Everything You Need to Know to Cook Today, 9th Edition.

In regards to the comment about the topping.... The coconut-pecan frosting should go on each layer by itself- so cake layer, topped with coconut-pecan frosting, then add another cake layer and more coconut pecan frosting then the final cake layer and the rest of the coconut-pecan frosting. The chocolate frosting, if you choose to make one, should go on the sides of the cakes. Also the recipes says only 2- 9 inch round cakes, but it should actually be three

This is not the recipe from the Throw Down with Bobby Flay. This cake, as others have commented, falls apart. Part of it fell apart before assembly on one of the three layers. Then, when frosting the sides it started to crumble. Then, when we cut it to eat it the cake crumbled. So disappointing.
The recipe is basically the recipe from the Baker's German Chocolate box - the butter, salt and sugar are different. However, the butter and salt work out to be the same when you add the salt to the unsalted butter.
I will not make this recipe again. The cake fell apart and didn't have much flavor. The filling was very good, but not good enough that I would make this cake again.
I am disappointed and will use a different recipe next time.

This is not the recipe for Bobby Flays Throwdown German Chocolate cake. This is the recipe for Aliyyah Baylors cake. She was and is the owner of Make My Cake!! Bobby Flays cake is here, just have to look for it. Have not made this yet, but plan too. I had to give it a rating to post, hope I can edit my review to give it the stars I am sure it deserves.

I may be a bit off here but did not cake on the Throwdown look a bit darker than you cake in this recipe. I'm just wondering if anyone else noticed that or was it just me. I know I have four eyes and I may be mistaken, but the cake served on the program was mighty dark and rich looking and the one I made was not. Hummm! Oh yes, it was delicious.

I was wondering, are you supposed to put the filling and then frost with chocolate frosting on top of the filling, or just filling in the middle and frosting on the tops and sides? I have a feeling that if you try to frost over the filling, it might turn into a gooey mess.

This cake is moist, and rich. All the flavors blend together in such decadent harmony I'm at a loss to even describe it well. It wasn't even difficult to make. Everyone should try this cake at least once.
