This is the cake receipe thats inside the german chocolate bar!!! All she did was put in chocolate chips and the chocolate frosting which are NOT needed. The dark cholocate overwhelms the delicate flavor of the german chocolate and the wonderful coconut pecan frosting (also inside the package of german chocolate She should be embarassed by using their receipe and claiming it for her own.

I made this cake and I have to say that it was incredible. WOW. The pecan frosting was amazing. The cake was moist and was perfectly flavored. It was so delicious. I made a standard ganache to top it all off, which was just the semi-sweet chocolate, vanilla and heavy cream recipe another reviewer recommended. I also remembered to add about a cup of chocolate chips to the cake before baking it at 350 for about 28 mins. The only true downfall of the cake is that I don't live with anyone that eats chocolate or nuts so I basically ate the entire cake in 4 days and the cake is huge!

I love to bake but had never attempted a German Chocolate Cake before. I am the neighborhood cook and I'm always sharing cookies, cake etc with the neighbors. Our neighbor across the street had a birthday a few days ago and german choclate is his favorite- so I tried this recipe. A couple of things- there is no temperature given to bake the cake in this recipe, so I guessed 350, which turhned out ok. In addition, there is nothing about preparing the pans- greasing, wax paper, nothing. The cakes stuck so badly that I had to start over- I used the recipe on the back of the German Chocolate box and it was wonderful! Last but not least, if you live at altitude (I live in Colorado, don't forget to adjust the recipe. I didn't the first time and it collapsed BADLY. I am usually thrilled by the recipes on this site and I was pretty disappointed with this one.

This cake is awesome - I love and my husband hates german chocolate cake and even he raved about it. I used a chocolate buttercream frosting on the sides - the recipe from the back of a Hershey's Cocoa canister. I don't know if it's as good as the secret recipe, but someone who owns a small business is entitled to keep a few trade secrets. The coconut-pecan filling was incredible. The next time I go to New York I'm going to Harlem to try the real thing.

Ok, saw this recipe on t.v. last night and just had to run out, buy everything and try it. While my cake is baking, it starts overflowing my 9 inch pans and spills into my oven! I know the recipe says use 3 9 inch pans but, I used 2 and didn't use all the batter. I don't believe I over filled them either. They were no fuller than any other cake I've made. So I don't understand why it did that. I see no one else has had this problem so I assume I screwed up somewhere. Well I'll have to try again, but not today! I baked at 350 as another commenter suggested. I'm sad :(

For anyone who is interested I found a recipe for German Chocolate Cake that is almost exactly like "Make My Cake" Check out The Taste Of Home Cookbook! I have made that recipe many times and it is VERY GOOD,however make sure you grease, flour and use parchment paper to line the pans. The cake is delicate and wants to stick to the pan.Happy Baking!!

Moist, easy, fluffy. . . basically a perfect German Chocolate Cake. And then I saw this episode again tonight. She goes through all of the steps, adding the flour, melted chocolate, and then chocolate chips. . . Chocolate chips? That wasn't listed in the recipe!!! Oh well, the cake was beautiful and tastey, but next time I might sneak in a cup or two of those chocolate chips that were missing from the recipe :

I was on a cooking/baking spree today (made homemade biscuits with buttermilk roast chicken for dinner and German Chocolate cake for dessert. After reading the reviews here, I decided to use the recipe I had in my Joy of Cooking cookbook for the cake and this recipe for the coconut pecan frosting. Coconut pecan is one of my most favorite frostings, and this recipe is the best one (by far! that I've ever tried. Incidentally, the cake recipe ingredients are very similar, but the JOC instructions are much more complete, which can make all the difference in how a dish turns out. I had intended to make a chocolate frosting for the top and sides of the cake, but I ran out of time. That turned out to be just fine, because I had enough coconut pecan frosting to fill both inside layers of the 3-layer cake and plenty left over to frost the top and sides as well. I know it's not traditional, but since I had enough I figured, "why not?" The whole process took more time than I had anticipated, but nothing was particularly difficult.

First time ever for making this cake, entered it in our county fair last week and won a blue ribbon! Would have liked the receipe to have been more complete; yet, it turned out great! Delicious and super moist!!!
