My grandmother used to make "ice cream" on her dairy farm by stirring cocoa, sugar and vanilla into her fresh cream, and just putting it in a cake pan and freezing it... she said that the cream was so heavy that it didn't make huge crystals... to my young palette it was definitely very good. Seemed just like store bought ice cream to me. So, yes I think you can make ice cream without a dedicated freezer, but you've got to have lots of cream in the recipe...

Great recipe, super easy. I used my kitchen aid mixer to do all the mixing, including blending in the nutella.

If there were 10 stars ...this recipe would earn them! This is exactly what you would expect if you were visiting Italy. Creamy, full of flavor, and easy to make. This will be a favorite in our house...hard to stop at one scoop!!

This is without a doubt the best thing I have ever eaten - and I can't stop eating it. The recipe is perfect just the way it is. Although I did think it made a little less than the recipe stated.

Fantastic gelato, and it's so easy to make!! I chilled the mixture in the refrigerator overnight before putting it into my ice cream maker. It came out so smooth and creamy. However, I poured the mixture into a plastic storage container and placed it in the freezer. I served it to my guests that evening for dessert, and it was remarkable! Everyone loved it! I can hardly wait to make it again!

This recipe is fantastic and so simple to make! I made this for my Italian family for an after dinner surprise, and they could not stop raving about it. The Nutella flavors come through strong and we loved it. Wouldn't change anything about the recipe. The toasted hazelnut garnish adds just the right amount of crunch. Thank you Giada!

This turned out great. I don't have much of a sweet tooth so will cut down the sugar next time, but everybody was blown away by it.

This recipe was out of this world and I cannot believe how easy it is to make Last time we were in Rome and Serranto we would eat gelato daily and it was so good. This recipe makes me feel like we are in Italy all over again!! There is not one thing I would change about this recipe!!
Thanks Giada!!

Turned out great, but have to give if 4 stars because its a little on the sweet side. Next time I may decrease the sugar content by 1/4 cup. Also I would melt down the Nutella with the warm custard mixture next time because I had chunks of Nutella pre-churning that I had to strain out. No one else had this problem? But this recipe is truly delicious. The consistency is amazing!
