I made this soup for my in-laws for Christmas Eve. Followed the recipe exactly. Made my own fish stock with the shrimp shells, fennel leaves, carrot, garlic, shallot. It was absolutely divine. The next day my father-in-law said he thought he was at the Waldorf Astoria! Wonderful recipe!

Loved this recipe. Served it Christmas Eve. Did not used the shelled mussels. Used scallops in their place.
No fennel, either.
This was the only food where there were NO leftovers, because everyone had 2nds.

Giada always makes things look easy, but her tips for this dish made it a special Christmas Eve meal for my family. I added scallops and extra shrimp and mussels and omitted the salmon - but her best suggestion to carefully scrub each mussel and clam made all the difference. The Cioppino was not overwhelmingly "fishy" just elegant and light - and so easy to make. Thanks Giada!

This was so easy and delicious! One of my dinner party guests said, "Can I have more soup for dessert, please?"

use cooked shrimp or it will have a strong fishy flavor. I use cod and it turned out great. !!!

This is an excellent and easy recipe. Didn't have fish stock so I simmered the shrimp shells in homemade chicken stock for about 20 minutes, made an excellent substution for the fish stock. Making this for a New Years party.

I saw Giada making this on the Food Network the other day and when I did a search here I came up with 13 "cioppino" recipes. Hers really is the simplest yet it is so flavorful. I'm really picky about fresh seafood, so I could only find littleneck clams, shrimp and shark, but I can't wait to try this with more fresh shellfish. I really wish I had some crab or scallops in there. I forgot the shallots and didn't have any tomato paste, but I think the San Marzano tomatoes I used made up for it.
