I made this pie for Easter at my Italian in-laws' house. THE GOOD: It's easy, looks lovely, and travels exceptionally well. THE BAD: It's expensive and bland -- and I say that as someone who followed the recipe to its last detail. Phyllo? Pine nuts? Ricotta? Great ingredient list. It just came together in an utterly forgettable way.
The whole pie was eaten, so clearly some folks liked it. I know a few didn't care for the toasted pine nuts, but I thought they were a nice touch.
VERDICT: If you're baking to impress, skip this recipe in favor of something a little more memorable...

This recipe is truly amazing! I made this recipe for Easter and used the version from Giada family dinners book.It is the perfect size for a family feast. It turned out gorgeous and delicious! I wish I could post the pic. I am no longer afraid to work with phyllo. Giada's recipe's never disappoint, I like to bake/cook occasionally and when I do, Giada's is my go-to chef. This pie looks professionally made and its delicious. I will definitely make this an Easter tradition. Thank you Giada!

Great recipe. I doubled the recipe to make two pies which are almost gone. I used a little more than two cups of powdered sugar and around a cup and a half of rice or so. These were the only changes. My mother used to make the "grain" pies every Easter and, unfortunately, I never kept the recipe. This was so close to her pies. The recipe is a keeper!!!!! Many thanks Giada.

I've made this several times and am headed to the store to get what I need to make it today. This pie is fabulous. And it looks like it could be difficult to make (and I'm tempted to let them believe it!. : Thanks, Giada!

This Easter pie was DELICIOUS! My husband's family makes an Easter pie/bread called Shadone with drained crushed pineapple. I've made it before, but this is so much easier and my husband LOVED it! I left out the orange and pine nuts and added a small can of well drained pineapple instead. I'm going to make a savory version with basket cheese, provolone, swiss, parmesan and hot italian sausage. The possibilities are endless! Buona Pasqua
