These were a big hit in my house and I actually had to make them two nights in a row at my husband's request! I used pepperjack cheese as my family does not like smoked cheeses. The pepperjack kicked up the flavor a notch I think! I also used panko bread crumbs and they made a delicious crust. You do need to drizzle them lightly with olive oil to get a good crust and I used a grill pan on the stove! No problems!

BIG hit...even with the meat eaters. Everyone loved this and it is so easy to make in advance and put on the grill for the vegetarians. It is a 10 star!

these were yummy! i couldn't find the smoked moz, so i used 1/2 cup of regular moz and 1 or 2 wedges of laughing cow fresco & chipotle (as posted by someone previously....i also used regular breadcrumbs in the mixture, but panko for the outer breading. i only got about 6 cakes as opposed to 9 like the recipe says. i made them on my grill pan and had no problems flipping them. they were delicious and were a hit at my dinner party!

I thought these had great flavor, I used roasted corn along with the smoked cheese. I am heartened to see that everybody else had such a hard time flipping these. I've tried them twice on the grill and will switch to stove top in the future.

These are a bit too bland, they need some more flavor - I wish I had added garlic & some chili pepper flakes. They're ok but they're hard to flip after you've cooked one side; they fall apart & look a bit messy.

I love most of Giada's recipes, but this wasn't one of them. This looked terrific of TV, so I thought I'd try it. Not worth the time and trouble. Didn't have the flavor it seemed it should. While grilling, it fell through the grates. I had to change to a stove-top grill quickly. Family wasn't impressed either.

I made these with smoked gouda and a little shallot (that's what we had in the house, and they turned out great! I'm making them again this weekend!

Made these last night & they were amazing! I had no problems with them falling apart on the grill. If you're not into smoked moz you could easily substitute for regular moz but I would add a diced red pepper or even a dash of hot sauce to give it a little kick.
I'll be making these all summer long! :

This recipe looks great! Can you use regular shredded mozzarella instead? If I don't have a grill pan, can I use a regular frying pan?

Someone please help because these look amazing!

The idea and flavors are delicious and super easy to prepare but I found it near impossible to cook these on an open grill and keep them in one piece, let alone flip them. Since I don't have a grill pan I placed them on an outdoor grill and then gingerly pulled them off and finished them under the broiler. I think a little spice or jalapeño would really kick this dish up a notch and the touch of creme fraiche or rich sour cream really sets this off.

Next time all lay them out on some foil or pan fry!
