This soup was delicious! I made this soup for my mom and I to have for dinner one night and I'll be honest, I'm a beginner at cooking, but this recipe was so easy! While it was cooking we both got really anxious to try it because it smellled so good! I love the extra pizazz that the fontina cheese gives for this soup. I am definitely making this one again!

I used Gruyere cheese the first night - most of the other recipes call for it. But the second serving I used the Fontina. I really like the Fontina better, it gives a wonderful rich flavor. The Thyme I had growing in my herb garden, I was surprised at the added flavor it gave the soup. This is my new best french onion soup recipe.

If you like onion soup you would really like this, the soup is very buttery. I like baking it a little longer so the cheese gets crustl on the bread! I added a little white wine; it gave it a nice flavor.

This recipe is a lot simpler than the onion soup recipe I used before (that one took 5 hours on the stove. If you can, don't substitute the fontina for something easier to get a hold of... the fontina is a perfect, creamy cheese that melts beautifully!

after returning from paris, my husband and son begged me to make french onion soup. This one was so easy and they said it rivaled the soup we had in paris. a real winner
