I have made this every year, but decided in the summer I wanted to make it. I bought an angel food cake broke that up, then layered some fresh strawberries that I had sliced and sugared, and then chocolate and then repeated ending with chocolate and a pretty strawberry on top. Since then I have tried frozen strawberries, frozen raspberries, and even used unsweetened strawberry or raspberry jam. My friend layered the angel food cake, sprinkled with rum, sliced bananas, jarred caramel sauce and the chocolate...wow she said it tasted like bananas foster. I have shared this recipe with so many and so many different versions, using any kind of pound cake or firm cake. Either way I have had it my husband is always wanting me to make it. The chocolate is what he loves the best and I am going to try making the chocolate and incorporating whatever I need to make it mousse.

I made this for a holiday dinner at my husband's fire station. At first I was iffy if it'll turn out well and if it's a recipe worth trying since it has an average of 4 stars. Read the reviews and decided to go with it. I'M GLAD I DID! Everyone LOVED it! I was hoping to take some leftovers home coz I just had a small portion at the party, but the bowl stayed at the station. Even the firefighters for the next shift had some too. My husband came home with a very clean bowl. Thanks Giada!

Thanx Giada for this recipe. I was just watching you on Food Network make it. I am going to make it for Christmas for my family. I know they are going to love it. I am also going to substitute hazelnut liqour for the coffee.

Very taste recipe. So many different things you can do with Panettone, it's wonderful. This recipe is no exception.
To herbarblab....while you MAY be able to find Panettone at some Italian specialty markets and maybe even a place like World Market year round (the latter is doubtful though, it shows up everywhere around the holidays. The good news is that it freezes beautifully. Cut the Panettone in slices, wrap each slice in plastic wrap and bag them up in freezer bags. I still have some from last year and it still good for this trifle, french toast or even bread pudding.

To Cheyenne 90---Panettone is a bread you can buy at any grocery store or a bakery. I plan to try this recipe, it sounds yummy.

Giada mentioned a good panettone that she liked. I can't find the name of the bakery anywhere. Can someone help?

Last year 2008 I saw Giada make this on her show. I always make a few new recipes each holiday season. Well, this was one of them. I have never had Panettone, but have seen it in our local store, so I said what the heck lets do it! My family is so glad I did! I throw a large open house every christmas and after most of the guest had trickled out I made indevidual trifles for everyone left. We sat around our crackling fireplace and raved about this! Thank you Giada for sharing with us your family recipes...........I use many of them. This year I am making this in my large trifle bowl.............but will double it or even triple the recipe. So easy but yet so elagent. you wont be disappointed. Oh and leftover
    panettone makes wonderful french toast.

After reading the other reviews, I had to post one. This dessert is WONDERFUL! I made it last Christmas and entire extended family still raves about it. I'll be making it again this year.
HINT: You need to use a good, moist pannetone. I added a layer of fresh blackberries and raspberries to each layer. Topped it with whipped cream, more berries and mint leaves. So pretty!
