Ingredients

  • 1/4 cup extra-virgin olive oil
  • 1 medium onion, coarsely chopped
  • 2 garlic cloves, peeled and coarsely chopped
  • 1 celery stalk, coarsely chopped
  • 1 carrot, coarsely chopped
  • 1 pound ground chuck beef
  • 1 (28-ounce) can crushed tomatoes
  • 1/4 cup flat-leaf Italian parsley, chopped
  • 8 fresh basil leaves, chopped
  • Salt and freshly ground black pepper
  • 1/4 cup freshly grated Pecorino Romano

Directions

In a large skillet heat the olive oil. When almost smoking, add the onion and garlic and saute over medium heat until the onions become very soft, about 8 minutes. Add the celery and carrot and saute for 5 minutes. Raise heat to high and add the ground beef. Saute, stirring frequently and breaking up any large lumps and cook until meat is no longer pink, about 10 minutes. Add the tomatoes, parsley and basil and cook over medium low heat until the sauce thickens. Season with salt and pepper. This will take approximately 1/2 hour. Finish bolognese with Pecorino Romano.

    Great bolognese

Easy and tasty. Delay adding the garlic for 3-5 minutes. 8 minutes cooking with the onion will give you nearly burnt... garlic. Read more

    Tastes so generic

Rated: 3 stars out of 5
I was so eager to try this as I love Giada. It was pretty simple to make but I think that led to its generic taste - it... reminded me of taco seasoning, or Taco Bell sauce or Sloppy Joes - I couldn't quite put my finger on exactly what it was. I'm not sure I'll try this one again - I can't imagine what went wrong...Read more

It really is simple and delicious

Rated: 5 stars out of 5
My husband loved this recipe. I added an extra 15oz can of diced tomatoes. I used 1.5 lb of ground sirloin (90/10) and... mixed it with 1lb of spagetti. Even though we loved this recipe as is, next time I might try some other reviewer's suggestions: add wine, mushrooms, tomato sauce and a few more spices (thyme, oregano, bay leaf, cinnamon, sugar).Read more

    Tasty.

Rated: 5 stars out of 5
I love this recipe. It's super yummy. I did change a few things though- I found that adding mushrooms adds to the recipe and... provides more "meatiness". I cook the mushrooms with the carrots and leave out the celery. Overall a great sauce that pairs well with penne to scoop up all the extras.Read more

    Just made it

Rated: 5 stars out of 5
Thought it was great spent 45 minutes reducing it. Delgazed prior to browning the meat with about a 1/4 cup of chianti... classico. May add a little heavy cream to try something different. It was FANTASTIC! and will definetly make again!Read more

I loved this recipe. It was simple and delicious. Instead of the ground beef, I used ground turkey. My friends loved it! ... I will be using this recipe for years to come!Read more
