This was so good, when I went to discard about a spoonful of leftovers, my husband protested. The addition of the sweet potato was genius. I fooled around a little bit with the cheeses (added a little more, added a little more liquid, and baked for 15 more minutes. The key is to let the dish rest after baking - that is what gels the flavors. I will absolutely make this again.

Gosh, when I first read the reviews I thought I'd have to change things up. But NOOOO. I didn't even check and went ahead and cooked my dish 20 minutes extra. SOOO moist, cheesy and delicious! It has an onion, garlic, smoked appley taste. Those sweet potatoes just make it. Thank you Giada, I love you and your recipes. If you cut your potatoes the size Giada suggest, you will have no problems. No need at all to add extra broth or cream. Love it.

The combination of potatoes and yams makes a beautiful gratin. A big hit at our Christmas day buffet. I will definitely use this recipe again!

Very very good! I used a mandolin and cut the potatoes probably 1/16 of an inch thick. I used two russet potatoes and two sweet potatoes. I ended up having to cook it about 20 minutes longer than the recipe says, even though my potatoes were cut so thin. I even threw on a little panko bread crumbs on top for the last five minutes or so. So yummy!

Another hit, Giada. Great recipe. We will use this recipe, in place of scalloped potatoes.

I part-cooked my potato slices because I had a feeling they would not cook completely in the oven. Following this recipe, I didn't have enough liquid to cover all the potatoes, so I added extra cream & broth but the dish still came out dry - it should be creamier & have a sauce. I have a much better creamy au gratin recipe that I prefer so I won't be making this one again.

Made this for dinner last night. I will be making it at least once a month, but making a bit more sauce. We loved this!!

An amazing dish! Watched the show, printed out the recipe, and headed to the store to buy the cheeses and cream. I had plenty of potatoes and onions. I did substitute dried thyme for the fresh--when my herbs come back in late spring I will use fresh. Not a lot of leftovers (hubby loved the dish. It's on my list to make again soon.

The recipe is perfect... However I did modify it slightly. I used shallots instead of white onions & added crumbled pancetta into the mixture... My one mistake was trying to use a shredded cheese blend, that burnt slightly... Tried to go on the cheap.. Stay with the recommended cheeses or at least not a "processed" cheese.
