This is a great salad. People who think it's bland are probably accustomed to syrupy salad-bar dressing and fake bacon toppings. Attn. other geniuses: The salad might have been salty because the recipe calls for kosher, which is half the strength of table salt. Example: 2 Tablespoons kosher salt=1 Tablespoon table salt. Understand the concept?

This salad is a bit plain. I tried it again and decided to add a bit of Parmesan cheese and to candy the hazelnuts with cayenne pepper and sugar. The flavors turned out really well together...it was a hit!

I'm surprised I didn't like this salad since it got so many good reviews. I read the comments about salt, so that wasn't an issue. I just found the salad to be bland and uninspiring.

i have to agree that you should leave the salt out of the dressing. i used the EXACT amounts of everything except the salt (since i had read the previous reviews. i used 1/2 the amt. of salt (kosher called for in the recipe and found it to be too much - although perfectly edible. the next time i make this, i will omit it altogether and add to salad as needed. i actually don't think the salad needs the salt at all - it's a wonderful array of flavors! btw - i just cut my broccoli into small florettes and the stem pieces into bite sized pieces. who needs a mandoline?! i also used toasted pine nuts.

I too found it way too salty but figured it was because I did not have Kosher salt and used regular salt. In order to lower the flavor a bit I add 1/4 tsp. of spicy mayonnaise. I also used almonds instead just because I prefer them. One thing that made this extremely quick and easy is in my grocery store I actually found a bag of fresh broccoli slaw. It worked great, saved me time and clean-up and was cheap.... I would take a look in your produce section near the bagged salad, it's a great alternative!

Great way to serve broccoli to the family - my daughter loved it! I dont think it's necessary to use a mandolin - just slicing the broccoli is fine. I used Kosher salt, but will use a bit less next time.

I wonder if the people who found this too salty used table salt (far denser, rather than Kosher salt. Using the same measurements this would make it too salty.
We love it, and have made many variations on this base.

My broccoli plants have been producing like crazy so I went searching for some new ideas. Tried this and it is fabulous! I used my very sharp chefs knife and slicked it vertically into very thin strips, then cut those strips in half or quarters depending on width. I found I was able to use lots of stem because letting it sit in the lemon dressing "cooks" it enough (think ceviche. I recommend marinating as long as you can as the flavor only improves.
Tonight I will be serving this salad for the fourth time and everyone is looking forward to it.
