I'm excited to make this pie due to the great reviews. However, I ordered in the ground grains of paradise as listed in the recipe and to my surprise it tastes spicy like pepper. I'm worried to use this in the pie filling. Can anyone who has used this please tell me the the flavor it gives the pie before I use it. I'm know my family will not like a spicy apple pie. I greatly appreciate any of your feedback re: using this spice. Hope to hear from you. Thank you so much!

Another great recipe! I only had a glass pie dish so I was afraid to put it on the bottom of the oven even though it was on a cookie sheet. So I put it on the lowest rack with a cookie sheet under it for the 1st 30 minutes and the bottom of the crust crisped up very nicely!

I've probably baked about four of these over the past year, and they were all great. I did add some cinnamon to it which I liked, and I always seem to ad-lib some different spices each time I bake one. It's definitely my favorite base for an apple pie recipe, and the apple jack crust is incredible.

I made some minor changes because I couldn't find the pan, the tapioca flour, or the paradise pepper locally. So I used the variety of apples and that technique! It just came out of the oven and smells amazing!

Dear Alton,
I have to tell you usually a lot of the stuff you do I agree with, but this recipe bugs me. My father has made apple pie for most of my life (i am 40 now. He usually makes around 20-30 pies because so many people like them. We give them away. We follow almost none of your rules. His most popular is Vermont Maple Syrup based pie made with a mixture of east coast apples (granny snith, macoun, macs, and cortlands and vermont maple syrup.

Once again another stellar recipe from AB. Some of the items were tough to find locally, but I found that Amazon has them all:

For those of you having difficulty finding the pie pan, it is because it is really a "quiche pan" If you look online for it, you will find many different options. Alton, love watching you....
