I love this soup. Its so user-friendly and Portuguese in spirit. I make the rice separately as an addition when plating because I love it soupy. I didn't want the rice to absorb the liquid altogether. Alternatively I added more garlic cloves, used linguiça instead, used homemade chicken stock wholly without using tap water, and sometimes throw in a chopped yam and/or any cooked beans I have lying around for extra heartiness.

Decent soup, but please change the name, as countless others have pointed out that this is *not at all authentically Portuguese* However, it is important to remember that Portuguese immigrants settled not only on the East Coast but also in the San Francisco area (and a number later moved to Hawaii, I married a descendant of one of these. He HATES kielbasa, I love it.

Totally get that this is not authentic, and I can't wait to make an authentic recipe. It's a great way to eat Kale. However, it's unlikely that it will be as tasty. I doubled the rice and it pretty much absorbed all of the cooking liquid by the end (sort of reminded me of jambalaya by dinner time. I figured since it wasn't authentic to begin with, I'd spice it up with some Sriracha, and I was glad I did. The spice worked well with the sausage and the veggies in the dish.

This is a great one pot wonder that is hearty enough to feed the whole family.

I come from the New Bedford area of Massachusetts where we know what real Kale Soup tastes like due to the large number of Portuguese residents here. Kale soup has chourico or linquica and has potatoes not rice. Would only use salt, pepper, garlic and Bay leaves for the spices.

My family absolutely loved this recipe. My husband called it "a good pot licker soup". Next time I will use more garlic & one mor carrot.
