This recipe was so good it was requested by EVERYONE at our gathering. I did use a little more bacon than the recipe called for and I used my homeade bread crumbs that I keep in the freezer. I made the dish the night before and instead of frying onions I used the can. I just sprinkled them on right after cooking. This recipe was exactly what I was looking for and it was excellent. I will be making it again VERY soon!!

I do not like green beans at all, I made this dish because my husband requested a GBC on Thanksgiving, and boy was it tasty! I have already been called 3 times for the recipe. Thanks Guy!

I never cared for the "traditional" green bean casserole and thought I'd give this a try for Thanksgiving this year. It was a big hit. I made the casserole the day before (including adding the panko and crumbled bacon topping and fried up the onion rings earlier Thanksgiving Day. No problem with them staying crisp. Added them per the recipe the last 5 minutes of baking. My tweaks: I used only about 1 cup of panko--I think 2 cups would have been way too much. Also, I blanched my beans for 6 minutes and they still had a nice little crunch. Unless you can get very tiny green beans you will need longer than a one minute blanch. Don't leave out the cayene--I think it makes the dish.

I made this for thanksgiving and it was way too dry. I almost added a can of cream of mushroom but didn't. It was a disaster. I will not make this again. I would add more mushrooms next time and make three times as much sauce if I did make again.

You can make everything in advance, even the fried onion/leeks. Just don't add the fried items until you bake it, they will crisp back up in the oven.

I made The Mean Green for Thanksgiving as an extra side dish and it ended up being the highlight of the meal! Everyone loved it and had seconds. I made it again for a Christmas party and it was the first dish to go! Thanks Guy!

I planned to make this for Thanksgiving, and tried it out beforehand to make sure it was good before springing it on the in-laws. My mother-in-law happened to stop by and tasted it. She loved it so much she took it all home with her, and told me to make it for every holiday meal. I love the fried onions, I will use them for lots of other things besides this casserole. A little bit of work, but really a great dish.

I concur with the flour comments. But come on...this recipe rocked. I (of course used what I had on hand. Green beans canned by mom, pre-sliced mushrooms, and french fried onions. I found it actually pretty quick to put together and the leftovers were great in a shepard's pie (along with the leftover potatoes as well.
