I also did this Thanksgiving morning. I also thought there was too much flour and it also took us a long time to make. We decided next time we would use all the fresh ingredients, but instead of makeing the roux, we would use the canned cream of mushroom soup recipe roux.

My family went crazy over this dish. Deep frying the onions was the best. I will never use those canned ones again and for that case of mushroom soup I bought at Costco it will sit in the pantry a little longer. Thanks for the heads up about the flour. If anyone cooks a lot, they would have caught the error. Anyway, this is the only way to make the "green bean casserole". So for every holiday from now on it's "The Mean Green" for our family. Thanks, Guy for sharing, and giving us a new family tradition. The Burnett Family

This was a great new spin on an old favorit. I used regular mushrooms and a bit more bacon, and fixed the flour measurments thanks to the reveiws of others. I was even able to prep this the night before so that all I had to do was layer the bread crumbs, bacon, and fry the onions and shallots. Worth the time and effort for sure!

This was an unbelievable dish. Everyone loved it. Definitly watch the flour, but if you know how to make a roux it shouldn't be an issue. I only used shitake mushroom and it was perfect. The panko, bacon, panko layer was perfect. Only extra tip::: Broil it for a little bit to accent the crust. But keep your eye on it! Perfect recipe to bring to a party or cook for the fam! 5+ stars!

I made the recipe for Thanksgiving for my in-laws and they absolutely loved it. I did think that the flour was a little much, but it was good nonetheless. While I was making it, I was just thinking how much fat there was in this recipe, the bacon grease, the butter, the fried onions for the topping....Anyways, the shiitake mushrooms gave it such a great flavor. I don't think I could have the traditional green bean casserole again. Great recipe.

I wish I would have read the reviews to see that the flour was wrong before I started. But even with too much flour it turned out great.
Very nice twist on this old classic recipe. The cayenne pepper added a nice spice to the dish but did not make it spicy which is very important.
Topped off with fresh fried onions and shallots was incredible also.

I will never make or eat the traditional green bean casserole again! This was one of the highlights on our Thanksgiving table. My husband made the dish - but substituted cream of mushroom soup and half and half for the roux and reduced the amount of the bread crumbs significantly! He also added alot more shitake and oyster mushrooms than the recipe instructed.

Ok, Let's first say that the flour portion is definately incorrect! Even on the TV SHOW .."Guy" says ..."about a 1/4 cup flour". So, use 1/4 cup or a 26oz can of Cream of Mushroom (get the good stuff. I tried the cream of mushroom because I was afraid of all the negativity on the correct flour amount. And guess what?! It turned out "Fantastic"!
I cooked the Green Beans a little longer to avoid to much of a "Raw Taste" and to compliment the Peppers and Mushrooms. (Be careful..don't overcook ...nobody likes a mushy dish!
I did add some of the Homemade fried onions into the mixture before cooking.
I used a 12inch Cast Iron frying pan to cook the "Mean Green" mixture. A seasoned Cast Iron pan works wonderful for these types of recipes.
The dish came out Fantastic. The onions were crunchy on top and the bean mixture had just the right "bite" below.
