You can create up to five timers

Ingredients

  • 2 cups whole wheat flour
  • 1/3-cup carob powder
  • 2 tsp. baking powder
  • 1/3-cup honey
  • 1/2-cup unsweetened applesauce
  • 1 tsp. vanilla extract
  • 1 cup water
  • 1/4-cup chopped nuts (optional)

Directions

In a large mixing bowl, combine flour, carob powder and baking powder. In a separate bowl, thoroughly mix remaining ingredients except nuts. Add dry ingredients to wet ingredients and mix well. Stir in nuts if using. Pour batter into a nonstick or lightly oiled 8-inch square baking dish. Bake at 350F for 35 minutes.

    I am going to make the carrob brownies tonight and use coconut milk instead of water. Also may add a Tblsp of molasses and a cup of black bean puree to fill in as eggs. I will have to increase dry ingredients, another half cup. Might add some flax seed for increase nutrition.

    Sorry to say these are not tasty at all. They are stiff and do not smell so inviting, not even while baking. I know Carob is not chocolate but it is a great substitute if you want to avoid caffeine. To satisfy my craving since the brownies did not, I made a cup of carob drink (just like cocoa and it was delicious. Maybe there is something else I can amend the recipe with? I followed the instructions.
