I love this recipe and have made it several times for small and large groups with stellar reviews. I think it is the perfect salsa base to create and explore local fresh ingredients. I make modifications depending on what looks good at the grocery store/market. I like to use a mix of smaller tomatoes or use heirloom if you can get good ones and a mix of different peppers (red, yellow, orange, and stove roasted poblano or serrano or jalapeno. I never use anything from the can. I do add the lime juice and sometimes use mango chopped really small. I like to mix up the type of onions I use to to push the sweet vs savory angle. Occasionally, I throw in some feta cheese if I am serving it on endive leaves, with a blended herb sauce on the base. Also very good. If you rate this less than a 4, you are doing something wrong! This is an easy, crowd pleaser.

Sorry - I love Paula but I was not impressed by this recipe. I made the recipe as stated w/o adding anything else (loved the suggestions. I had my hubby & 2 kids all taste test this recipe vs. another homemade salsa & a store bought one and all 4 of us picked this recipe as last place. I did not make the chips.

A tip on frying the tortilla chips. . .to avoid soggy or not crispy chips; fry until the bubbles stop then remove from oil. You will have crispy chips every time. Cheers!

Since Paula offers alternatives, I will tell you what we used. It was so good.. people couldn't stop eating it. It makes a big batch and it was gone in one night.

We used: 1 can diced tomatoes plus 1 can Rotel diced tomatoes HOT flavor
    1 can black beans
    1 mango
A little more than half a red onion.
1 fresh jalapeno plus 1 cubanelle pepper.
Little more than 2 tablespoons of red wine vinegar.
    2 cloves fresh garlic
    Juice of 2 limes
    about 1/4 cilantro

It was.. sooo... good. Must.. make.. more.

The avocado, one lime juiced, salt and pepper, and mango was a wonderful addition. Thanks Paula Dean. Another family dinner hit!

I used this salsa for a Baked Chicken Salsa dish and it came out great. I marinated the chicken parts for about 6 hours in Olive oil, chopped garlic cloves, ground cumin, red pepper flakes, fresh chopped cilantro leaves, salt, ground pepper, about an ounces of Jose Cuervo's classic lime margarita mix (tequila, triple sec, and lime juice, and shredded colby jack cheese.

I seared the chicken in olive oil both sides before baking. Once cooked, I added the salsa for a few minutes to bake on top. And then added shredded cheddar and monterey jack cheese (what I had on hand and it was wonderful for another couple of minutes until it melted.

Served with black beans and rice and corn tortilla chips.

This recipe is super simple to make. I will say that since roma tomatoes are available all year, make it with those if garden fresh tomatoes are not in season. I tried making it with the canned tomatoes that she suggested and there is NO substitution for that fresh taste that only real (uncanned tomatoes provide. . The recipe does not call for lime, but if you watch the video attached to the recipe, you will see she does add lime. Adding the lime, makes a big difference. All in all, it is a great and EASY salsa recipe!!

This salsa was excellent! I did add a few things, including a jar of mild peppers and a little balsalmic vinegar. Very good!

Amazing salsa, fresh, easy, tasty and I will make it again and again! Great for parties, everyone loved it. Using a food processor made making this salsa quick. I haven't tried adding additional ingredients into it yet, but the salsa is a very good base for making your own creations.
