Good recipe, and the addition of citrus really wakes up the taste. But too much sugar in the topping for my taste. I will cut the sugar next time.

I wasn't sure about the addition citrus juice here but as it turns out, I think it really adds a lot to the crisp. I used Bosc pears the first time I made it and wished I had known they would not get soft in the baking process like the apples do. The second time I made it I used a softer pear and it was much better. So keep that in mind if you like both the pear and apple to be soft.

I've never made a fruit crisp before, but this dish had all the ingredients and flavors of the season so I decided to give it a go. I'm glad I did. Such a wonderful dish and a real crowd pleaser. Served with a scoop of good vanilla ice-cream, this can't be beat. Do adhere strictly to the amounts of citrus the recipe calls for; I think I put in a tad too much and some bites had a pretty good zing!

Once again, Ina Garten has given us a great recipe! (Thank you Ina! This smells absolutely wonderful! Tastes great too. Would suggest serving it with vanilla ice cream in the future. This was my first time to cook with pears and the first time to make a "Crisp." As recommended by some of the other reviewers, I slightly reduced the sugar. Good idea - it was still plenty sweet. Also, I'll chop the apples in smaller chunks next time. I tried to do as Ina had instructed in her show, my pears were perfect, but the apples not quite cooked through (I cooked it 10 minutes longer too!. Be advised this makes a HUGE batch! I halved the recipe. Finally, this took me longer to prepare than the recipe suggests . . . those pears get really slippery too! This is perfect for Fall . . . enjoy!!

I've made this several times now, and it's delicious every time. It's like a big bowl of fall. I like the combo of apple and pears... it maked the flavor a little more complex.
Delicious with good vanilla ice cream.
