When I saw this I thought, "wow that looks easy, even I can probably pull that off!" And I am not, by any means, someone that should be in the kitchen. City girl to the core, everything I eat has already been prepared. And yet, my first foray into the world of Apple Turnovers was a huge success: easy, fast, satisfyingly delicious.
Tonight, my boyfriend -- a drum banging musician -- and I are banding together to create an entire dinner based off of recipes from one of Ina Garten's books: Indonesian Ginger Chicken, Parmesan Smashed Potatoes, and the infamous Apple Turnovers.

I made these Monday night - with lots of snow around we wanted something warm and comforting and that didn't require a lot of work since it was a weeknight. These were the perfect choice and exceeded our expectations! Even the fussy 9-year old who didn't want to try it because it didn't 'look like apple pie' ended up eating the whole thing! I have to say thank god I had made only a half batch since there were only 4 of us. (I have a feeling we would have eating at least 6.
I did make the mistake of letting the pastry get a little too warm at first so it was a little tricky to work with when it was time to fold and move them. So definitely, prep and cut the pastry and then put it in the fridge until you are ready to fill it. Next time I would cut the apples a little smaller and we did add a little extra sugar (instead of the 1.5 tbs a half batch would require, we added 2 tbs which I will do again. We sprinkled some course demerara sugar on the top which added some extra texture. And a couple days before I had made a caramel sauce which we warmed and drizzled over these and the vanilla bean ice cream we served them in. Unbelievable! I can't wait to make these for a dinner party! Thank you Ina! Its so fun when something so easy can be so tasty and sophisticated.

I served these for a lunch dessert and everybody loved them. They ended up taking all the rest home with them! The dried cherries gave it a nice twist. These were really easy and quick to make.

I made these today and WOW, sooo good. I added some little caramel balls that I found in the store near the bags of choc. chips and that juat added more goodness. They would have been great without them too I'm sure. I read a couple of reviews and baked them at 375, next time I will do 400 like Ina said, the pastry would have turned out a little better, but regardless they are fantastic. I wanted to try a little bite of one and ended up eating the whole thing. Thanks again Ina!

I made these last year as a Thanksgiving dessert and they were an instant winner. I followed the recipe exactly and they came out great. Very east too! Put it this way, it's almost a year later and my friend still talks about how good they were.

Dissapointing.
I made this for the first time ever and the filling was medioker(sp and a little to citricy for my taste, and the dough obsorbed the moistness from the filling. very good when hot out of the oven but within an hour it had become soggy.

These were so delicious. I loved the orange flavor and the dried cherries made the turnovers special as well. The only thing is- the first time I made these, the bottoms became dark and the tops had not cooked thoroughly. I'm not sure if anyone else had this problem but the next time I made them I reduced the temperature to 350 and they cooked perfectly. Thank you as always, Ina, for another great recipe!

FANTASTIC!!!!!!! By the way, the cream they poured over it on the show was just that, heavy cream. I also added a very thin layer of a white sugar glaze..They were gone an hour!!!!!!
