The cake is perfect---very moist. It tastes like a chocolate cake you would get in a restaurant. I had to leave the egg yolk out of the frosting because I am pregnant and it turned out great anyway---very light and airy--despite not whipping it. Next time I am going to try the cake with a vanilla buttercream. This will be my standard chocolate cake recipe! Excellent.

This cake failed twice in a row. I have a degree in culinary arts from Johnson and Wales so I am not new to baking. This recipe caused the cake to run over the top of the pan and the rest of the cake had a disgusting texture. I made it twice exactly according to the recipe and I will never make it again. Very unacceptable from a reputable website.

Moist, chocolate-ty, and just plain good. My family doesn't like their desserts too sweet, so I cut the sugar by a 1/2 cup and it still tasted great. Frosting was a cinch to make and very tasty as well! Ina's THE BEST.

The cake has awesome flavor and is simple to make. The icing has great flavor, but I used about half of the required confectioner's sugar and I mixed bittersweet with milk chocolate. The icing was sweet enough when I put some of the sugar in, so I didn't think it needed the full 1.25 cups.
Awesome recipe! My family loved it, especially the day after.

Like all of Ina's recipes, this chocolate cake takes something you're familiar with and gives it an elegant, sophisticated kick in the pants! Remember when you were five years old and you took a bite of that piece of birthday cake and everything was right in the world? This recipe captures that moment in your adulthood! Not too sweet, but perfectly flavorful. Decadently moist with the silkiest frosting that compliments instead of overpowers (I find myself pushing away the frosting on most cakes, but not this one!. The only criticisms I have: I think I might make 1.5 times the frosting next time since I felt it was a bit thin in the middle.

This is an outstanding cake. It is very moist and flavorful. The icing was smooth and creamy, I may cut the coffee powder in half next time, I thought it was a little strong; but overall fantastic cake, and not that difficult to make.
