I made this today with a few modifications, since I was serving it to 3 children. I only used 1 cup of red wine, instead of a whole bottle. I also added a cup of frozen peas to the stew at the end, since my kids will eat these. I also choose to serve it over mashed potatoes, which was out of this world! My family loved this dish! Highly recommended with my few changes. You will not be disappointed.

This recipe is good, but if you do not like the taste of wine in your food, you will not like this one. I would substitute regular coarse chopped onions in place of the pearl onions. Otherwise, recipe is easy and good on a cold night.

This is so fantastic! I have made this twice now for dinner parties and people go crazy for it. Make it a few days in advance - the flavors definitely meld and improve and the whole thing is just yummy. The garlic toast is a must and just ingenious! Ina - you're my hero!

If you want your family or guest say YUM while eating dinner, you need to make this! I didn't use a pound of butter, just one stick! VERY GOOD!!!

My daughter asked me to fix this for her husband's boss who was coming over for dinner. We had had it for the holidays and I was hoping it would be a good choice for a fix ahead dinner. The next night she reheated it - added some frozen peas and served it as the recipie suggested - to rave reviews. I did not have any cognac - but this is certainly something I will keep and fix many times for my various dinner guests.

My husband and I followed this recipe exactly, except we substituted sirloin for the chuck. It is fantastic. We enjoyed it just as much as left overs. We made it again for company and got rave reviews. Thanks Ina.
