I enjoyed the tang of the buttermilk in these mashed potatoes. I'd make them again.

PEOPLE... You do not have to use a food mill and then place the pan over another pan of hot water to maintain the heat in the potatoes!!! Just mash them and then use an electric mixer to whip them briefly till they are fluffy! Then just put the lid on the pan and the steam from the heat of the potatoes will keep them nice and moist till you are ready to serve. Just stir them!!! This isn't rocket science, it's just mashed potatoes.

I will never make mashed potatoes differently after making this for my family last night. The buttermilk makes this AMAZING, slightly sour and salty. If you don't have buttermilk on hand, go out and buy some. It'll be worth it.
However, I didn't use a food mill because I think it's kind of redundant. It takes me about 2 minutes to mash by hand. Also, I put in the salt and pepper to taste. The full recipe amount can be too much for some people. A little added garlic might be good, too.

I am a mom of 4 boys and mashed potatoes are serious business in our home. They loved them!

The mashed potatoes where awsome and easy to make. I used a regular potato masher and there were no lumps and they came out very smooth and creamy.

Hmm.. I love Ina's recipes in general (the latest hit being her brownie tart, but I was disappointed w/the mashed potatoes. They were too salty. I followed her advice w/the size of the disk for the food mill, but my mashed potatoes had tiny clumps in them. I was hoping for a creamier consistency. The packaged mashed potatoes at the supermarket tasted better than these..
    sorry Ina!

I am not a big potato fan, but these mashed potatoes were awesome - creamy and delicious! The buttermilk added a mild "zing" as promised, but did use less salt than the recipe called for. Another great recipe from Ina.
